TPR Lunch Tote

TPR Radio Bookmark

With the push of a button, you can “bookmark” the public radio stories you would like to follow up on… when it’s convenient for you. In the car or at home, you can take it anywhere! The Radio Bookmark has buttons that can be configured to bookmark stories and music from KSTX or another participating public radio station. The Radio Bookmark just records the time of day when you press the button and automatically matches your bookmarks with your station’s program schedule.  Plug it into your computer’s USB port and your own personal web page lists your “bookmarked” stories in an easy-to-read format.  Replay and email stories and find more information regarding the topic and other stories by the same author.

Stargazing Collection  

The National Geographic Backyard Guide to the Night Sky covers everything a beginning stargazer will need to know, from understanding the phases of the moon to picking Mars out of a planetary lineup to identifying the kinds of stars twinkling in the constellations. Throughout the book, star charts and tables present key facts in an easy-to-understand format, sidebars and fact boxes present illuminating anecdotes and fun facts. Autographed by Stardate’s own Sandy Wood who authored the foreword.
Also included is a CD of Holst: The Planets to listen to while you explore the night sky. This CD features the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra performing The Planets Suite, the stirring work by Gustav Holst. Also on the CD are two film score compositions by John Williams, the Close Encounters of the Third Kind Suite and the Star Wars Main title.  These two pieces show how Williams was influenced by Holst’s amazing work!

100 BEST CHOPIN CLASSICS is the next release in EMI's highly successful 100 BEST series. This 6 CD box set contains all the most familiar and best-loved works by the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, performed by a galaxy of star pianists. The pianists heard in this album include exciting new performers like Ingrid Fliter and Nelson Goerner, as well as many established stars like Leif Ove Ansdnes, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Stanislav Bunin, Stephen Kovacevich, Mikhail Pletnev and Maurizio Pollini. Other great artists of the keyboard who participate are Dmitri Alexeev, Claudio Arrau, Georges Cziffra, Yuri Egorov, Samson François, Andre Gavrilov, Garrick Ohlsson, Maria Tipo and Alexis Weissenberg. Also heard are two legendary pianists from an earlier time: Dinu Lipatti and Arthur Rubinstein. This collection covers all the main genres in which Chopin wrote, and includes the complete sets of Preludes and Études, the 14 Waltzes, plus a generous selection of the most familiar Polonaises, Mazurkas, Nocturnes and Impromptus, as well as single pieces like the soothing Berceuse, the evocative Barcarolle and the stirring Fantaisie-impromptu. Works for piano and orchestra are represented by the Andante spianato et grand polonaise, Krakowiak, Fantasy on Polish Airs, Variations on `La ci darem la mano' and extracts from the two piano concertos.

Schumann: The 4 Symphonies

Leonard Bernstein was full of surprises. A conductor often accused of hopeless self-indulgence, he responded intuitively to the classical aesthetic of Haydn, and no less to the early Romantic bravado of Schumann. In fact, the Schumann symphonies have never been better played than they are here as conducted by Bernstein. These are performances of high passion--they're either very fast or very slow--and extraordinary color and drama. Bernstein sticks faithfully to the composer's original, thick orchestrations but makes each symphony work through playing of unflagging clarity and chamber music-like balance. That this was all done live, in performances of such wide emotional range, is amazing. But amazing was what Bernstein did best.

Shostakovich: Jazz Suites 1 & 2

Although the symphonies, string quartets and concertos represent the core of his achievement, Shostakovich had wide sympathies across the musical spectrum: hence his oft-repeated comment that he enjoyed all music from Bach to Offenbach.

Moreover, the revival in recent years of such works as his 1958 musical Moscow-Cheryomushki attests to a composer who entered into the spirit of ‘light music’ with enjoyment and enthusiasm. All of the works on this disc will come as a surprise to those who know Shostakovich only as a concert composer in the Beethovenian tradition.
