The Newsmaker Hour is a program featuring speakers addressing local and national organizations on a variety of topics and current events produced by Texas Public Radio's Ernie Villarreal.  Local organizations regularly featured are the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio and the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.  Speakers invited to address the public and students at St. Mary's University, UTSA, San Antonio College and St. Philip's College are also featured.  National organizations include the City Club of Cleveland and the National Press Club.  Audio CDs of the locally produced programs are available for purchase by contacting producer Ernie Villarreal at .

"Hispanic Research for You and Your Family"
May 2, 2008 · The forum titled "Hispanic Research for You and Your Family" was hosted by the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists and held at Our Lady of the Lake University on April 12, 2008.  The panel, addressing Latino issues, featured Federico Suberi, Director of Latinos and Media Project and a professor at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Texas State University in San Marcos; Dr. Liliana Oaks, Geriatric Coordinator of curriculum Development at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; Karl Eschbach, Texas State Data Center Director at the University of Texas at San Antonio and associate professor for the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research at UTSA; Rodolfo Rosales, associate professor of Political Science at UTSA.

"Blogging versus Journalism: Is the Line Blurring?"
April 25, 2008 · Some of the biggest news stories have been broken in the past several years, not by the "usual" media organizations...but by bloggers! The question has been raised if breaking news or "scoops" has shifted to this new media? New York Times tech columnist, David Pogue, is the guest speaker at the Cleveland City Club. He spoke to the organization on November 30, 2007. His presentation is titled "Blogging versus Journalism: Is the Line Blurring?"


"The Media and the Election"
April 18, 2008 · Senior Writer Ken Walsh, Chief White House correspondent for U.S. News and World Report magazine spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on April 10, 2008. His presentation is titled "The Media and the Election". Introducing Ken Walsh is World Affairs Council of San Antonio board of trustees chair elect, Pat Burr.


"U.S.-India Relations"
April 11, 2008 · The World Affairs Council of San Antonio invited Ambassador Ronen Sen, the Indian ambassador to the United States to speak to their members and guests on the Indian - United States relationships and other issues facing India. Ambassador Sen spoke on March 7, 2008. Introducing Ambassador Sen is Kirk McDonald Chairman of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio Board of Trustees.


"The State of Latino Education"
April 4, 2008 · Richard Fry, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Associate with the Pew Hispanic Research Center in Washington, D.C. He was the invited guest speaker of the Adelante: U.S. Education Leadership Fund. Adenlante is a national non-profit organization based in San Antonio whose mission is to try to increase the college graduation rates of Hispanics. Fry spoke on February 28, 2008. The title of his presentation is "The State of Latino Education." Adelante Executive Director Andria Macias-Castillo introduces Richard Fry. www.adelantefund.org


"Spain in the European Community: A Success Story"
March 28, 2008 · This Newsmaker Hour presentation feature two speakers. First, at a luncheon at which members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio joined The Friends of the Canary Islands, Consul General of Spain, Ambassador Miguel Angel Fernandez de Mazarambroz gave a presentation on February 29, 2008 titled "Spain in the European Community: A Success Story." Introducing the Ambassador is former San Antonio mayor, Henry Cisneros.

"Building a Movement"
March 28, 2008 · Following the Ambassador's presentation is Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She is also daughter of former Texas Governor Ann Richards. Richards spoke on March 8 at the 70th annual conference of the ACLU of Texas meeting in San Antonio. Terri Burkes, ACLU of Texas Executive Director, introduces Cecile Richards whose presentation is title "Building a Movement."


"Rebuilding Our National Community"
March 21, 2008 · U.S. Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy of the 1st District of Rhode Island is the guest speaker of the City Club of Cleveland on this Newsmaker Hour.  He spoke on March 7, 2008.  He was first elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1988 at the age of 21, and is currently serving in his seventh term as a member of the U.S. Congress.  He addresses the audience about political leaders' need to return to progressive ideals in order to unify the nation and create a renewed sense of community in his presentation titled "Rebuilding Our National Community."


Texas Water Symposium: "Policy, Planning and Politics: Where Do We go from Here?" 
March 14, 2008 · This Newsmaker Hour features the fourth and final panel discussion of the Texa Water Symposium series.  The project is a joint effort of Schreiner University, Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg and Texas Public Radio. It was recorded on March 6, 2008 in the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center on the campus of Schreiner University.  The title of the panel discussion is, "Policy, Planning and Politics: Where Do We go from Here?".  On the panel are Myron Hess, legal counsel and director of Texas Water Programs for the National Wildlife Federation Austin; Texas House of Representative for District 119, Robert Puente; and Laura Marbury, Senior Water Analyst for the Texas Office of Environmental Defense Land, Water and Wildlife Program.  Moderating the discussion is Bill Jeffrey, a professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.


“Interfaith Dialogue: A Pathway to Peace”
March 7, 2008 ·This Newsmaker Hour features the second speaker in the 2007 - 2008 Lin Great Speakers Series of St. Mary's University. The series is made possible from an endowment made possible by the widow of Shu Chi Lin, Mrs. Chang Li-Chiao and his son, Vincent Lin, in his memory. The theme of this year's series is "Interfaith Dialogue: A Pathway to Peace". The guest speaker is Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington. Introducing Cardinal McCarrick is David Manuel, Vice-President of Academic Affairs at St. Mary's University here in San Antonio.


“Myths and Realities in the Globalization Debate”
February 22, 2008 (Repeated March 29) ·Vivek Wadhwa spoke to the City Club of Cleveland on January 28, 2008.  He is the Wertheim Fellow, Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard University. The title of his presentation is "Myths and Realities in the Globalization Debate: Why Current U.S. Policies could be a Competitive Blunder." 


“Philanthropic Support for UTHSC”
February 15, 2008 ·President Dr. Francisco Cigarroa of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio delivers the annual State of the University address.  The address was presented on January 29, 2008 at the UTHSC.  Dr. Cigarroa touches on philanthropy, which the UTHSC raised more philanthropic support in 2007 than in any fiscal year in the University's history.  He also talks about capital expansion, the acquisition of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center and future initiatives. 


“Ex-Mex: From Migrant to Immigrant”
February 8, 2008 ·The University of Texas at San Antonio's Mexico Center and the World Affairs Council of San Antonio co-hosted an event featuring former Foreign Minister of Mexico, Dr. Jorge Castaneda.  He is currently the Global Distinguished Professor of Politics and Latin American Studies at New York University.  He spoke at the UTSA downtown campus on January 29, 2008 on his latest book titled "Ex-Mex: From Migrant to Immigrant".  A panel discussion followed his presentation.  On the panel are Lionel Sosa, CEO and President of MATT.org; Raul Rodriguez, the Benson Chair of Banking and Finance at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio; and Bob Rivard, editor of the San Antonio Expess-News.  Opening the program is Dr. Harriett Romo, Director of the Mexico Center.


“Water Conservation: Taking Action for Your Children's Children”
February 1, 2008 · This is the third in a series of panel discussions of the Texas Water Symposium, a project is a partnership of Schreiner University, Texas Tech University in Fredericksburg and Texas Public Radio.  On the panel are John Sutton, with the Texas Water Development Board; Dr. Ken Kramer, Director of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club; Karen Guz, Director of Conservation for the San Antonio Water System and Billy Kniffen, County extension agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Menard County.  The event was held on January 24, 2008 on the Texas Tech University at Junction campus.  Moderating the discussion and introducing the panel members is Bill Jeffrey, a professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

"Education for the 21st Century”
January 25, 2008 ·This Newsmaker Hour features former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala.  She was the invited guest speaker of the Cleveland City Club.  She spoke on December 21, 2007.  She is currently the President of the University of Miami in Florida.  She is regarded as a leading scholar on the political economy of state and local government.  Her presentation is titled "Education for the 21st Century".  Introducing Donna Shalala is City Club President Lee Friedman.


Dr. Harry Harding, Director of Research and Analysis of the Eurasia Group
January 18, 2008 · This Newsmaker Hour is another in a series of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio Distinguished Lecture Series speakers. Dr. Harding spoke on January 10, 2008. The topic of discussion is China, and the invited guest speaker is Dr. Harry Harding. Dr. Harding is the Director of Research and Analysis of the Eurasia Group. The Eurasia Group is a leading global political risk and consulting firm. Dr. Harding is also the author of several books on China including A Fragile Relationship: The United States and China Since 1972; China's Second Revolution: Reform After Mao and China's Foreign Relations in the 1980s. The title of his presentation is "Re-thinking China". Introducing Dr. Harry Harding is Kirk McDonald, Chair of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio Board of Trustees.

January 11, 2008 · The theme for St. Mary's University's 2007-2008 Lin Great Speaker series is "Interfaith Dialogue: A Pathway to Peace."  The first of three invited guest speakers is Rabbi Jack Bemporad, D.D., Director of the Center for Interreligious Understanding and Professor of Interreligious Studies, Vatican's Angelicum University, Rome.  Introducing Rabbi Bemporad is St. Mary's University Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. David Manuel.


State Senator Leticia Van de Putte & Nan Roman
January 4, 2008 · Opening the program is Texas State Senator for the 26th District, Leticia Van de Putte.  She was the opening speaker at the 2007 San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Summit held on November 14, 2007 on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word.  Following Senator Van de Putte is Nan Roman, Chief Executive Officer of the National Alliance to End Homelessness.  She was the keynote speaker at the first Issues on Profile luncheon hosted by the San Antonio Non-profit Council held at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio on October 17, 2007.  Introducing Senator Van de Putte, whose presentation is titled "The Pharmaceutical Prescription and the Hispanic Community," is Lizette Andre, with Pfizer.

 “A Walk Through China: Days in the Heartland of an Emerging Nation”
December 28, 2007 · Alina Romanowski, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Professional and Cultural Exchange at the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs for the U. S. Department of State, is a featured speaker in the continuing Distinguished Speaker Series from the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.  The title of her presentation is "A Walk Through China: Days in the Heartland of an Emerging Nation."  Introducing Ms. Romanowski is World Affairs Council board member Alice Carrington Foultz.


 Panel discussion on the development of microfinance in the US
December 21, 2007 · This week's program features the opening session of the first Summit on Microfinance in the United States held in the country.  It was hosted by San Antonio based ACCION Texas, and held on November 6, 2007.  The opening session was a panel discussion featuring expert panelists who have played a significant role in the development of microfinance in the United States.  The panel members are Robert Annibale, Global Director of Microfinance for Citi; Lynda de la Vina, Dean of the University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business; and Elaine Edgcomb, Director of FIELD, Fund for Innovation, Effectiveness, Learning and Dissemination at the Aspen Institute.


 Summit on Microfinance in the United States
December 14, 2007 · Federal Reserve System Chairman Ben Bernanke was the keynote speaker at the first ever conference on microfinancing in the United States.  The Summit on Microfinance in the United States was held in San Antonio on November 6, 2007.  The host organization is ACCION Texas, the largest microlender in the country and based in San Antonio.  In addition to Chairman Bernanke's presentation, an interview with ACCION Texas President/CEO Janie Barrera and an interview with Robert Frank, author of the book Falling Behind: How Rising Inequality Harms the Middle Class are presented. Frank also co-author a book with Chairman Bernanke titled Principles of Economics.


“America the Principled: Six Opportunities for Becoming a Can-Do Nation Once Again”
December 7, 2007 · Rosabeth Moss Kanter is a specialist in strategy, innovation and leadership for change.  She has guided leaders worldwide for more than 25 years through teaching, writing and direct consultation to major corporations and governments.  She is the author and co-author of 16 books including Confidence: How Winning Streaks and Losing Streaks Begin and End.  Her latest book, the basis of her presentation to the City Club of Cleveland on November 16, 2007, is America the Principled: Six Opportunities for Becoming a Can-Do Nation Once Again.


 DNA and Genetic Research Panel Discussion hosted by Ira Flatow
November 30, 2007 · As part of Texas Public Radio's "DNA Files" series , NPR's Talk of the Nation Science Friday host Ira Flatow moderated a panel discussion on November 14, 2007 at the San Pedro Playhouse.  The program covered the DNA research and genetic advancements currently done at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  On the panel are Dr. Sunil Ahuja, Dr. Paul Hasty and Dr. Consuelo Walss-Bass at UTHSCSA and Dr. Matthew Dolan at San Antonio Military Medical Center at Wilford Hall Medical Center.


Mark Everson, president of the American Red Cross
November 23, 2007 · The American Red Cross is a $3.2 billion agency providing almost half the nation's blood supply, responding to thousands of disasters each year, helping service men and women and their families, training millions of people in lifesaving skills and relying on the donation of time, money and blood to do its work.  Heading this organization is Mark Everson, President and CEO since May 2007.  He spoke to a City Club of Cleveland luncheon audience on October 19, 2007 about his focus on the management and mission of the American Red Cross to strengthen its capacity to help.


 Texas Water Symposium - “H2O: The Science of Water Issues”
November 16, 2007 · This is the second of four panel discussions of the Texas Water Symposium.  The symposium is a joint project of Schriener University, Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg, Texas and Texas Public Radio.  The event was held on November 7, 2007 in the ballroom of the Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, Texas.  On the panel are Tom Arsuffi, Ph.D., Director, Llano River Field Stattion Texas Tech University Center at Junction Texas; Ken Rainwater, Ph.D. Water Resource Center Director and professor of Civil Engineering at Texas Tech University; Kirk WineMiller, Ph.D., Section of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University; and George Ward, Ph.D., Research Scientist and Associate Director of the Center for Research in Water Resources at the University of Texas.  Moderating the discussion and opening the program is Bill Jeffrey, professor at Texas Tech Law School in Lubbock.

“Leadership in the Oval Office and the Washington, D.C You're Not Hearing About”
November 9, 2007 · Award-winning author and historian Michael Beschloss spoke at Trinity University in San Antonio on November 6, 2007.  He is the first guest speaker of Trinity's 2007-2008 Distinguished Lecture Series made possible by an endowment gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown of San Antonio.  His latest book is titled Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America 1789-1989.  Trinity University President John Brazil introduces Michael Beschloss whose presentation is titled "Leadership in the Oval Office and the Washington, D.C You're Not Hearing About."


Former US Ambassador Bob Krueger speaking on his years in Africa
November 2, 2007 · Former U.S. Ambassador Bob Krueger and his wife, Kathleen, have co-authored a book titled From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi: Our Embassy Years Living in Genocide.  They along with Paul Rusesabagina, the hotel manager who is credited for saving the lives of about 1200 people during the Rwanda genocide, and who is portrayed by Don Cheadle in the Academy award nominated film Hotel Rwanda spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on October 5, 2007 about their experiences in Africa which is the basis of the book.  Mr. Rusesabagina has also written an autobiography titled An Ordinary Man.


“What Terrorists Want: Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat”
October 26, 2007 · Dr. Louise Richardson, Executive Dean for the Institute for Advance Study at Radcliffe, spoke on October 4, 2007 as part of the Travis Park Methodist Church Justice in Action 2007 Speaker Series.  The title of her presentation is "What Terrorists Want: Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat."


“The Cristo Rey Story: Our Programs, Our Schools, Our Contribution”
October 19, 2007
· On October 5, 2007, Reverend John Foley, President of Cristor Rey Network, a national association of 12 high schools that provide quality, spoke to members of the City Club of Cleveland.  Father Foley is a native of Chicago and entered the society of Jesus in 1954.  He assumed the presidency of Cristo Rey Network and is responsible for managing its day-to-date programs and activities.  "The Cristo Rey Story: Our Programs, Our Schools, Our Contribution" is the title of his presentation.


John Quinones, ABC News Primetime co-anchor
October 12, 2007 · San Antonio native and ABC News Primetime co-anchor, John Quinones was the invited guest speaker of the City Club of Cleveland.  His presentation was titled "20/20 Vision of Hispanic America."  He spoke on September 20, 2007 as Hispanic Heritage Month began.  Quinones has won six Emmy Awards, including his coverage of the Congo's virgin rainforest which also won the Ark Trust Wildlife Award.


 Texas Water Symposium - “More Precious than Gold”
October 5, 2007 · The Texas Water Symposium is a joint project of Schreiner University, Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg and Texas Public Radio.  This is the first of a series of four panel discussions addressing water issues in the San Antonio and Hill Country area titled More Precious than Gold: The ethical, economic, legal and environmental implications of supplying 40 million people with water by 2050.  On today’s panel are: Joe Beal, General Manager of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA); Bill West, General Manager of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA); and Robert Potts, former General Manager of the Edwards Aquifer Authority and current President of the Dixon Water Foundation.  Moderating the panel discussion is Bill Jeffrey, Professor at Texas Tech University Law School.  Opening the event is Dr. Tim Summerlin, President of Schreiner University.  For more information about the Texas Water Symposium and to submit questions visit: www.schreiner.edu/water


“Preparing the Next Generation for Leadership in a Changing Democracy”
September 28, 2007 · Speaking to the members and guests at the City Club of Cleveland luncheon on September 21, 2007 was Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum.  She is President of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.  Dr. Tatum is a scholar, teacher, author, administrator and race relations expert.  Her books are Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria and Assimilation Blues: Black Families in a White Community.  The title of her presentation is “In Search of Wisdom: Preparing the Next Generation for Leadership in a Changing Democracy.”


 Analysis of Felipe Calderon's first year in office
September 21, 2007 · Two speakers give their analysis of the first year of Mexican President Felipe Calderon's term to the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on September 17, 2007.  Raul Rodriguez, a World Affairs Council of San Antonio board trustee and the Benson Chair in Banking and Finance at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, makes some opening remarks before introducing the speakers: Roger Wallace, Co-Chair of the Woodrow Wilson Mexico Institute Advisory Board and Roberto Newell, CEO of the Mexico Institute for Competitiveness, an independent think tank dedicated to enhance the competitiveness of Mexico within a globalized economy.

September 14, 2007 · Charles E. Cook, Jr. is the publisher of "The Cook Political Report," an online analysis of electoral politics.  He spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on September 7, 2007 with an analysis of the 2008 presidential, Senate and House races.


Excellence in Military Ethics
September 7, 2007 · Lieutenant General Franklin J. Hagenbeck, Superintendent of the United States Military Academy West Point, spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on August 31, 2007.  Lt. Gen. Hagenbeck talks about West Point's role as a preeminent leadership development institution through its Center for Excellence in Professional Military Ethics.


Young Women in Math and Science
August 31, 2007 · Dr. Ruth J. Simmons was sworn in as the 18th President of Brown University on July 3, 2001.  She is a native Texan and a 1967 graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans.  She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in Romance Languages and Literatures in 1973.  She believes in the power of education to transform lives.  She talks about promoting young women in the fields of math and science to members and guests at a City Club of Cleveland luncheon.


Consumer Credit and Debt
August 24, 2007 · Robert D. Manning, Ph.D. is a research professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, Director of its Center for Consumer Financial Services and author of the book Credit Card Nation: The Consequences of America's Addiction to Credit.  His research has influenced public policy debate in the United States, Canada, the U.K. Korea and Australia.  Speaking before the City Club of Cleveland on February 9, 2007, he talks about the economic, political and cultural impacts of the global expansion of consumer credit and debt.  This program originally aired on July 6, 2007.


 Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders)
August 17, 2007 · Memebers of the medical humanitarian organization, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders visited San Antonio in March 2007.  At an event open to the public at the Buena Vista Theatre Building at the downtown campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio, a MSF panel talked about the challenges of reaching people caught in conflict, treating malnutrition and responding to epidemics.  Texas Public Radio's news director, David Martin Davies, was the moderator.


 Bioscience and Healthcare Industry in San Antonio
August 10, 2007 · San Antonio's bioscience and healthcare industry has been expanding during the past several years that it has become a dominant force in the city's economy.  The industry has an annual economic impact of more than 14-billion dollars.  Ann Stevens is President of BioMed SA an organization charged with promoting San Antonio's biomedical assets.  Stevens spoke to a luncheon audience of the Association for Corporate Growth Central Texas on July 31, 2007.  Roy Graham, ACG Central Texas' President opened the program.

 “The Role of Women and the Issues Affecting Women”
August 10, 2007 · The July monthly meeting of the San Antonio Women's Chamber of Commerce invited representatives of the San Antonio City Council to address the organization on July 25, 2007 on the topic "The Role of Women and the Issues Affecting Women in the New Term."  City council District 5 representative Loudres Galvan, District 6 representative Delicia Herrera and District 7 representative Justine Rodriguez spoke to the organization.  Mary Lynn Barnard, a SAWCC board member was the moderator.


Data Security and Identity Theft
August 3, 2007 · William E. Kovacic is the Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission.  He has held that position since January 2006.  Prior to joining the FTC in 2006, he was the E.K. Gubin Professor of Government Contracts Law at George Washington University Law School.  He addressed members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on July 20, 2007.  He speaks about data security and identity theft and the challenges of a major agency to keep up with rapidly changing technology.

July 13, 2007 · This special one-hour radio documentary features never-before-released archive audio, gleaned from thousands of hours of recordings housed at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, period news broadcasts, private conversations with Lyndon Baines Johnson, and the words of Lady Bird Johnson.  Producer Joe Bevilacqua spent nearly five months listening to the rare tapes and traveled to Washington, D.C. to interview Mrs. Johnson's colleagues and friends.

June 1, 2007 · Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was Maryland's first Lieutenant Governor.  She is the eldest child of the late Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy.  She talked on April 6, 2007 to the City Club of Cleveland about her latest book Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches are Mixing God with Politics and Losing their Way.  In the book, she recounts her father's struggle to realize the goals of improving the world by helping the poor and starving amidst the turmoil of the 1960s.

May 18, 2007 · Honduran Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Roberto Flores-Bermudez, spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio at a luncheon on May 1, 2007.  The title of his presentation is “United States and Central American Relations: Building on the Partnership.”  Introducing the Ambassador is Glenn MacTaggart, a board member of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.


Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns
May 11, 2007 · Although he has been making documentary films for more than thirty years, Ken Burns became a household name after his most notable production, the mini-series "The Civil War."  He is an Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee, and received an Emmy for this documentaries "The Civil War" in 1990, "Baseball" in 1994 and "Jazz" in 2001.  His newest film, which PBS television will air in September, is titled "The War", about the sacrifices Americans in several communities gave during World War II.  Burns has received criticism from Latino organizations because the film lacks any mention of the sacrifices and contributions made by minorities.  Burns speaks at the City Club of Cleveland.

Iraqi Oil for Food Program
April 27, 2007 · Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul A. Volcker spoke at the City Club of Cleveland on April 13, 2007.  He was chairman during the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan administrations.  Under his leadership, the Federal Reserve was largely credited for ending the United States' stagflation crisis of the 1970's by limiting the growth of the money supply.  Volcker talks about his investigation into the Iraqi Oil for Food program.


 Bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Mexico
April 20, 2007 · The Council of American Ambassadors, based in Washington D.C. met in San Antonio on April 10, 2007.  Mexico's Ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, was in San Antonio to participate in a number of events sponsored by the CAA.  One of those events included a luncheon in cooperation with the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.  At the luncheon, Ambassador Sarukhan was the guest speaker where he spoke about the bilateral relationship between the United States and Mexico.

 “The Enron Case”
April 13, 2007 · The American Bar Association's Litigation Section held their annual Spring meeting in San Antonio April 11-14, 2007.  One of the sessions included a panel discussion comprised of three of the attorneys who were involved in what was seen as "the Case of the Century", the case U.S. vs. Skilling and Lay or more commonly called "The Enron Case."  On the panel were Bruce Collins, defense attorney for Ken Lay, Chairman of Enron who died at the age of 64 in 2006 and was awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud; Daniel Petrocelli, defense attorney for Jeffrey Skilling who was sentenced to 24 years, four months in prison after also being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud.  The Government's prosecuting attorney on the panel was Kathryn Ruemmler.  The panel discussion was held on April 12, 2007.  Chair of the Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association, Kim Askew who is a partner with the law firm of Hugh Luce, LLP in Dallas, moderates the discussion.

Gutierrez is the 35th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, overseeing a diverse Cabinet agency of 38,000 workers and a $6.5 billion budget.  The Commerce Department focuses on promoting American business at home and aboard.  Secretary Gutierrez was an invited guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Associated General Contractors of America in San Antonio March 21-24th.


 Mary Peters, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation
March 30, 2007 · Mary Peters is the 15th secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.  She was nominated by President George W. Bush on September 5, 2006, and confirmed by the Senate on September 30, 2006.  She is responsible for maintaining a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system while leading an agency with almost 60,000 employees and a budget of $61.6 billion overseeing air, maritime and surface transportation missions.  Secretary Peters was an invited guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Associated General Contractors of America in San Antonio March 21-24th.

March 23, 2007 · The African American Community History Project focused on economic development on Saturday, February 17, 2007 during the three day "The Commerce of Culture" program.  Dr. Lloyd Blanchard was the invited luncheon speaker who addressed the issue of "Leadership in Local Community Development."  Dr. Blanchard is a native of San Antonio and has worked in a number of government departments including the Office of Management and Budget and the Small Business Administration.  A nationally recognized expert in neighborhood economic development issues, Dr. Blanchard is currently the Executive Assistant to the Chancellor at Louisiana State University.

March 16, 2007 · The African American Community History Project is a collaboration between the Ella Austin Community Center, Dignowity Neighborhood Association, the UTSA Political Science Department and the History and Urban Studies Department at Trinity University.  On this Newsmaker Hour program, a panel comprised of Richard Lewis, sociology professor at UTSA; Eddie Harris, owner of Harris Flowers; Chuck Andrews, former Vice President of Sutton Broadcasting; and Derek Miles, doctoral candidate at the University of the Incarnate Word discuss economic development of San Antonio's historic east side.  In addition, Assistant Professor of History Carey Latimore at Trinity University begins the program by giving a presentation focusing on the economic development of the African American community and San Antonio's east side.

March 9, 2007 · Dr. Fawaz Gerges addressed members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on February 28, 2007.  Dr. Gerges is the Christian A. Johnson Chair in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College located just north of New York City. He is a senior analyst and regular commentator for ABC News and National Public Radio's Morning Edition.  He has appeared in many television and radio networks around the world including CNN, CBS, the BBC and Al-Jazeera.  He is the author of Journey of the Jihadist: Inside Muslim Militancy and The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global.


“Nature-Deficit Disorder
March 2, 2007 · Richard Louv, author and journalist on family, nature and community, speaks about his most recent book titled Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.  In the book, Louv argues that the increased emphasis on technology and structured play has “de-natured” today’s children and calls for a return to an awareness of and appreciation for the natural world.  Louv sees the restorative power of nature and provides many ideas for change.  He is an advisor to the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World award program and the Scientific Council on the Developing Child.  He is also a visiting scholar at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.  He is a founder of Connect for Kids, the largest child advocacy site on the web.  He has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and Talk of the Nation, Good Morning America, The Morning Show on CBS and on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer on PBS to name a few.  The United Nations commissioned his monograph on fatherhood for the U. N. Year of the Child.

Patrick Lang is a retired senior military intelligence officer.  He spoke on February 6, 2007 at St. Mary's University in San Antonio on Islam.  He was the invited guest speaker of the University's Graduate International Relations Program and the Fund for Judaeo-Christian studies.  He was the first director of the Defense Human Intelligence Service within the Defense Intelligence Agency.  Col. Lang was also the first professor of Arabic language at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

February 16, 2007 · Michael Scharf, a professor of law and Director of the Frederick K. February 2, 2007 · Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel was the invited guest speaker of the Lin Great Speaker series at St. Mary's University in San Antonio.  He spoke on January 25, 2007.  Dr. Emanuel is a bioethicist and oncologist and has spent most of his professional career seeking solutions to the challenges facing health care in the United States.  He was a member of President Bill Clinton's Health Care Task Force and has lectured on health care reform, specifically on universal health care vouchers.  He is the author of a book on medical ethics The Ends of Human Life: Medical Ethics in a Liberal Polity  and No Margin, No Mission: Health Care Organizations and the Quest for Ethical Excellence.

January 19, 2007 · The French Ambassador to the United States, his Excellency Jean David-Levitte was in San Antonio on January 18, 2007.  He spoke at the Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio on the topic “The Middle East: A French Perspective.”  In his presentation, the Ambassador touches on the reasons France will not send troops to take part in the Iraq War, why the French government saw the situation as potentially dangerous one and how even after this current riff between the United States and French governments, their relationship will continue to be a strong one because of their shared history.

One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children
December 22, 2006 · December 1st was designated as World AIDS Day.  In observance of that day, the City Club of Cleveland invited author Melissa Fay Greene to talk about her latest book titled There Is No Me Without You: One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children.  In 2005, Ethiopia counted among its population 1.5 million orphans.  Officials estimate some 12 million children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS in all of sub-Sahara Africa.  In her book, she tells the story of the AIDS crisis in Africa.  Ms. Greene's other books are The Temple Bombing and Praying for Sheetrock: A Work of Nonfiction.


 Dr. Michael Porter on "The Competitiveness Advantage of Texas"

 Rebuilding Lives in Afghanistan

The World War I Living History Project
This week in the Newsmaker Hour time slot, we present a special Veterans Day program.  In 1917-1918, 4.5 million Americans served in World War I.  Of that number only 14 remain.   The World War I Living History Project honors the sacrifices and contributions of America's last surviving WWI veterans.  The producers have travelled the country in search of the men and women who made the world (in President Wilson's words) "safe for democracy."  Twelve of these veterans, aged 105 to 115, share their reminiscences, humor and wit on a two-hour radio special hosted by award-winning CBS anchor Walter Cronkite.

This program featured David Gergen, currently a professor of public service at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and editor-at-large for the magazine U.S.News and World Report.  He spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on October 17, 2006.  Prior to working for the magazine and as professor, David Gergen worked for four presidents.  He was an advisor to Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford; communications director for Ronald Reagan and served as counselor to President Bill Clinton.  From this unique bird’s eye view of behind the scenes observation of the workings of Presidents of both parties Mr. Gergen published a book in 2000 titled Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton.  With the November elections a little more than a week away, David Gergen shares his assessment of U-S foreign policy during Bush’s second administration and addresses the prevailing political climate, and what impact next month’s elections could have on U-S foreign policy.  October 27, 2006

Former Senator and Ambassador to Burundi and Botswana Bob Krueger spoke on September 21, 2006 as part of Travis Park Methodist Church's Justice In Action series in San Antonio.  Bob Krueger, a native of New Braunfels, Texas was Ambassador to Burundi from 1994-1996, then named Ambassador to Botswana from 1996-2000.  He is currently a distinguished visiting professor at Texas State University and the University of Texas.  October 13, 2006


  Ambassadors Roundtable Panel Discussion
The World Affairs Council of San Antonio initiated its inaugural Ambassadors Roundtable Panel Discussion.  The topic of discussion was Central America.   The luncheon was held on September 21, 2006.   Glen MacTaggart, a board member of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio makes some opening remarks before introducing the panel members.   On the panel were former Ambassador to Honduras, Crescencio Arcos who is currently the Assistant Secretary of International Affairs in the Department of Homeland Security; James Cregan, a former Foreign Service Diplomat and Ambassador to Honduras as well; and Dan Johnson, former Ambassador to Suriname.  September 29, 2006


  The Code Red Report
The Code Red report is a study on the health care conditions of the State of Texas with a list of recommendations by a task force comprised by a non-partisan group of individuals including small and large business employers, hospital and medical school officials, health policy experts and community and business leaders.  The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce held its 2006 Health Care Summit on September 7, 2006.  A panel made up of San Antonio area health and community leaders discussed the recommendations in the Code Red report.  The panel discussion is moderated by Dianna Burns-Bank, President of the Bexar County Medical Society.  On the panel are John Hornbeck, President and CEO, Methodist Health System; George Hernandez, President and CEO, University Health System; Dr. Fernando Guerra, Director, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and Joe Krier, President and CEO, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.  Following the panel discussion is Neal Lane, Chair of the Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas.  The complete Code Red report can be found at www.coderedtexas.org  September 22, 2006

Ambassador Clovis Maksoud is Director of the Center for the Global South at American University in Washington, D.C.  In addition to being a professor of International Law at American University, he is also an attorney, a journalist and a diplomat.  He is part of the United Nations Development Programs Advisory Board for the Arab Human Development Reports.  He is the author of numerous articles, including books on the Middle East, among them: The Meaning of Non Alignment, The Crisis of the Arab Left and The Arab Image.  Ambassador Clovis Maksoud spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on August 11, 2006 discussing the situation between Israel and Lebanon.  September 1, 2006

“Mexico: Getting to Know the Neighbors”
Reporter and public television anchor Ray Suarez travels to Mexico City to explore residents’ attitudes toward the United States and key issues that link the two countries, including immigration, free trade, and the war on drugs.  The program also reviews the history of U.S.-Mexico relations, from the raids of Pancho Villa to the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and looks back at the controversial Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.  August 11, 2006


Citadel of Free Speech Award Presentation
Ambassador Andrew Young, Principal and Chairman of GoodWorks International, was awarded the City Club of Cleveland's Citadel of Free Speech Award.  The award, given on June 1, 2006, recognizes and honors an individual or organization who has made a significant contribution to the advancement, protection or promotion of free speech.  August 4, 2006

  Senator John Cornyn at the Bilateral Immigration Forum
The Free Trade Alliance San Antonio hosted a Bilateral Immigration Forum on June 1-2, 2006 to give policy and law makers from both the United States and Mexico an opportunity to present and discuss solutions to the immigration debate.  This program features Texas Senator John Cornyn who was the invited luncheon speaker.  Senator Cornyn chairs the Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship and will a member of the congressional conference committee which will try to bridge the differences in the House of Representatives and Senate versions of their respective immigration bills to come up with one immigration bill.  June 16, 2006


Law Day
In observance of Law Day on May 5, 2006, the City Club of Cleveland invited guest speaker was May Jo White.  Today she is the chair of the 22-lawyer litigation group Debevois and Plimpton LLP in New York City.  Prior to that position she was the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1993-2002.  She was the first woman to serve in this position, which is recognized as the premier US attorney's office in the United States.  June 2, 2006


  7th Annual Congressional Free Trade Forum
The Free Trade Alliance San Antonio hosted its seventh annual Congressional Free Trade Forum "A View from Capital Hill."  The Free Trade Alliance San Antonio invites the Bexar County congressional representatives to talk about important trade related issues important to their constituents in the San Antonio and South Texas area.  Three of four Bexar County congressmen were in attendance at the event held on May 11, 2006 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown San Antonio.  Lamar Smith representing the 20th Congressional District, 21st Congressional District representative Charlie Gonzalez and 28th Congressional District representative Henry Cuellar spoke to those in attendance on issues such as immigration reform and multi-lateral trade agreements.  Representative for the 23rd Congressional District, Henry Bonilla did not attend.  May 26, 2006


  Issues facing Mexico:  Free Trade, Immigration & Elections
This program features two prominent individuals from Mexico.  Former Mexico City mayor and founder of the PRD, Party of the Democratic Revolution, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas spoke on May 11, 2006 at a luncheon at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.  The event was part of the University's 125th year.  Mr. Cardenas spoke on various issues facing Mexico, among them the July 2006 Mexican presidential elections, immigration and free trade.  Also on the program was Eugenio Clariond Reyes, CEO of Grupo ISMA, one of Mexico's leading diversified industrial companies with manufacturing and distribution facilities in Mexico, the United States, Spain and throughout Central and South America.  Mr. Clariond spoke primarily on NAFTA and free trade.  May 19, 2006


Government Waste
Thomas A. Schatz is president of Citizens Against Government Waste, and has held that position since 2001.  He spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on April 28, 2006.  Schatz is a nationally recognized spokesman on government waste, and in addition to heading the CAGW, has spearheaded the nationwide expansion of the grassroots group Taxpayers Action Network.  His presentation is titled "The Politics of Pork."  May 12, 2006


  “Moving Towards a Multicultural Democracy”
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Native American activist and author Winona LaDuke, is Anishinabe from the Makwah Dedaem (Bear Clan) of the Mississippi Band of the White Earth Reservations in northern Minnesota.  She spoke on March 24, 2006 at St. Philip's College in San Antonio as part of the 2005-2006 President's Lecture Series.  LaDuke was the recipient of the 1989 Reebok Human Rights Award and was named on of the "50 Leaders for the Future" by Time Magazine in 1995.  She was Ralph Nader's Vice-Presidential running mate in 1996 and 2000.  Her presentation is titled "Moving Towards a Multicultural Democracy."  May 5, 2006


Congressman John Murtha Speaking on the War in Iraq
One of President Bush’s most recent critics of the war in Iraq is Democratic Congressman John Murtha.  He is the 12th Congressional District Representative from Pennsylvania, a seat he has held since 1974.  He is one of the most respected Congressmen for his first hand knowledge of military and defense issues and has been a trusted advisor to presidents of both parties on the military.  In this presentation delivered on April 7, 2006 to the City Club of Cleveland, he talks about what he sees as really happening in Iraq and his position that American troops should redeploy out of Iraq caught up in a civil war and rebuild for a global war against terrorism.  April 28, 2006


Native American Issues
Tex G. Hall is the former President of the National Congress of American Indians and Chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.  His Native American name is “Ihbudah Hishi” which means “Red Tipped Arrow.”  He was the guest speaker of the City Club of Cleveland and spoke about issues which are important to native Americans today.  He has become the most active voice for tribal rights in Washington, D.C. and is tackling many issues including trust reform, economic development, homeland security and domestic violence.  April 21, 2006


Realizing the Promise of the Human Genome
Dr. Ralph I. Horowitz is the Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs at Case Western Reserve University.  He is a highly respected doctor and internationally known for a number of his accomplishments, among them pioneering research that has helped establish the field of clinical investigation and outcomes research.  He spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland; his presentation titled “Realizing the Promise of the Human Genome.”  April 14, 2006

Regarded as one of the United States’ foremost experts on school choice, teacher pay, teacher quality, financing public schools and methods for scientific, quantitative evaluation of educational policies, Caroline Minter Hoxby spoke on March 3, 2006 to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland.  She explores three areas of education in the United States; the relevance of comparisons between achievement by American students and other countries, the latest evidence on charter schools and their impact on surrounding public schools and the benefits of designing policies to reward talented teachers.  April 7, 2006

  “Our Environmental Destiny”
Addressing a capacity audience at McAllister Auditorium on the campus of San Antonio College, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. brought his message of environmental protection to San Antonio on March 1, 2006.  His presentation titled “Our Environmental Destiny” included much of the material in his New York Times bestseller Crimes Against Nature.  The book criticizes the Bush Administration as having the worst environmental record in the history of the United States.  Kennedy serves as a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council and is President of the Waterkeeper Alliance.  He is a co-host on the program “Ring of Fire” which airs on Air America Radio.  He has been recognized as one of Time Magazine’s “Heroes of the Planet” for his success in leading the fight to restore the Hudson River.  March 10, 2006


  Afghans for Civil Society
Sarah Chayes was a foreign correspondent for National Public Radio, beginning her work with NPR in 1997.  She spoke on February 7, 2006 as the first in the Travis Park Speaker Series hosted by the Travis Park Methodist Church in downtown San Antonio.  She left NPR after covering the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan, to focus on running a non-governmental, non-profit organization in Kandahar called Afghans for Civil Society.  She is now with ArghandMarch 3, 2006


  Michael Chertoff on Border Security and Immigration
Cabinet Secretary Michael Chertoff, head of the Department of Homeland Security, made a brief visit to San Antonio on March 3, 2006 and spoke at a breakfast program to members of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce about plans to strengthen border security, reform the immigration process and create a better system to provide safe and secure travel between borders.  March 3, 2006


International Fight Against Doping in Sports
Torino, Italy is the site for the 20th Olympic Winter Games in 2006.  With steroids and other performance enhancing drugs in much of the news in the world of sports, the City Club of Cleveland's guest speaker on this Newsmaker Hour is very timely.  Richard Pound is the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee's World Anti-Doping Agency.  He spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on January 13, 2006 on the international fight against doping in sports.  February 3, 2006

Former FEMA Director James Lee Witt
Addressing the City Club of Cleveland is former Federal Emergency Management Agency director James Lee Witt.  He served under President Bill Clinton's administration from 1993 - 2001.  In 1997, President Clinton promoted Witt to cabinet status, a first for a FEMA director.  Witt is credited for enhancing the status of FEMA, one from an unsuccessful bureaucratic management agency to an internationally lauded agency.  Witt spoke on December 16, 2005 to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland.  January 6, 2006
