The Newsmaker Hour is a program featuring speakers addressing local and national organizations on a variety of topics and current events produced by Texas Public Radio's Ernie Villarreal. Local organizations regularly featured are the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio and the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. Speakers invited to address the public and students at St. Mary's University, UTSA, San Antonio College and St. Philip's College are also featured. Heat-Related Deaths Among Secondary Student Athletes
June 26, 2009 · The 60th annual convention of the National Athletic Trainers Association was held in San Antonio June 18-20, 2009. The number of heat-related deaths during the past decade of secondary student athletes has been a major concern of the NATA and other sports organizations. The conference began with a panel discussion introducing a task force committee's consensus statement on the pre-season heat acclimatization guidelines for secondary school athletes. The guidelines can be found on the organization's website, www.nata.org. Opening the program is NATA president Marjorie Albohm.
Diabetes in San Antonio
June 19, 2009 · Diabetes is a illness affecting a large number of the San Antonio population. Health official estimate there are even several thousand more who aren't aware that they have diabetes. On this Newsmaker Hour, Dr. Vincent Fonseca, Epidemiologist for the State of Texas is the keynote speaker at a luncheon hosted by Humana, Inc., the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Fonseca's presentation is titled "Winning at Work" which is a program of the ADA designed to detect, prevent and manage diabetes in the workplace. Also on the program are Dr. Scott Simpson with Humana and Michael McBride with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa and chair of the S.A. Chapter of the ADA. The latter organization engages the next generation of world leaders who are on college campuses around the world. Lauro Bustamante
Lauro Bustamante is 58 years-old and has lived in San Antonio for more than five decades. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Houston in 1979 and operates a private law practice in San Antonio. Bustamante ran unsuccessfully in 2006 as Democrat for Texas Justice in the 4th Court of Appeals. His platform centers around a large expansion of local education.
Napoleon Madrid
Napoleon Madrid is 44 years-old and has called San Antonio home for more than 18 years. He founded the non-profit organization United Americans for The Arts and Trades in 2003. Madrid entered the race in an effort to “clean up the corruption of City Hall.” Unlike most of the candidates on this ballot, Madrid has not run in a previous race for mayor.
Julie Iris Oldham
Julie Iris Oldham has lived in San Antonio for 57 years. She became a political activist in 1990 working on behalf of the homeless in our community. She’s the co-founder of Texas Women’s Business Association and also founded and ran Dunhill Personnel, a recruiting firm, from 1980 to 1985. Oldham wants to end “city corruption” if elected mayor. Her visibility in city government for several decades has prompted her nickname: Mama Bexar.
Rhett R. Smith
Rhett R. Smith is 58 years-old and has established a career in private security. Smith ran for U.S. Senator from Texas in the Democratic primary, but failed to win the nomination. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973 with a B.A. in Accounting. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1979 to 1983. Smith says ending what he calls political corruption and protecting the first amendment would be his priorities in he was elected mayor.
Michael “Commander” Idrogo
Michael “Commander” Idrogo is a Navy commander veteran of foreign wars according to his website. He claims that unnecessary raises given to city staff are the root of “corruption” he would end if elected mayor. Idrogo also claims to have elaborate plans to bring fashion designers and professional sports teams to San Antonio, and reveal a hidden source of water to ease drought in the area. Mr. Idrogo did not respond to repeated requests to be a part the program.

Rajmohan Gandhi was the guest speaker at the City Club of Cleveland on September 5, 2008. R. Gandhi is a research professor at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. His biography about his grandfather is the first to give a complete and balanced account of Mahatma Gandhi's life, development of his beliefs and his political campaigns.

October 17, 2008 · Dr. M. Sanjayan is the lead scientist of teh Nature Conservancy. He spoke at a luncheon on September 10, 2008 co-hosted by the Nature Conservancy and the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. The title of his presentation is "Scarce Water in a Growing World". October 3, 2008 · This Newsmaker Hour features the first panel discussion of the Texas Water Symposium series. The series is a joint project of Schreiner University, Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg, the Hill Country Alliance and Texas Public Radio. The discussions address water issues in the San Antonio and Hill Country area. This panel discussion is titled "Texas Hill Country in Change: People, Property, Planning and Springs". On the panel are Chad Norris, aquatic biologist with the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife; Bebe and Mary Fenstermaker, owners of the Maverick Ranch-Fromme Farm in northeast Bexar County; and Sean Garretson, President of Pegasus Planning In Austin, Texas. Moderating the discussion is Robert Potts, President of Dixon Water Foundation. Opening the program is Tom Arsuffi, Director of the Texas Tech University Center at Junction. The event was held at the Boerne Convention Center on September 25, 2008.

UTHSC 2008 Frank Bryant Memorial Lecture Series
September 26, 2008 · This Newsmaker Hour program features two speakers invited as part of the 2008 Frank Bryant Memorial Lecture series at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The series is funded primarily by the UTHSC's Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics and the Salinger-Forland Endowment. This year's speakers are Dr. Paul Farmer, the subject of the book Mountains Beyond Mountains written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Tracy Kidder, the other featured speaker. They spoke on September 22, 2008 at the UT-Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Bill Henrich, Dean of the School of Medicine at the UTHSC, opens the program.

September 12, 2008 · The Second Annual Multicultural Conference on Breast Cancer was held at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on September 6. The conference was hosted by the San Antonio Chapter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the UTHSC San Antonio Council for Excellence in Women's Health. The keynote speaker is Dr. Amelie G. Ramirez, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UT Health Science Center and the founding Director of the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR).

August 22, 2008 · The first and only African American to attain the coveted title of International Grand Master of Chess in 1999, Maurice Ashley spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on February 1, 2008. He is called the Tiger Woods of chess and is an advocate for mentoring programs and other initiatives that support, nurture and encourse youth. The title of his presentation is "Motivating Youth to Achieve Educational Excellence."

August 8, 2008 ·Patrick Kennedy is the youngest of three children of Senator Edward Kennedy and Joan Bennett Kennedy. He is the U-S Congressional Representative of District One of Rhode Island. He spoke to members and guests of the City Club of Cleveland on March 7, 2008, the eve of the 40th anniversary of his Uncle Robert Kennedy's assassination. The title of his presentation is "Rebuilding Our National Community".

Dixon was the invited guest luncheon speaker at the San Antonio African-American Community History Project's conference titled "Talk to Me: A Forum on the Media". Dixon's presentation is titled: "The Price of Corporate Media: Can We Afford It?. He spoke on June 14, 2008. The conference was held on the campus of Trinity University.

August 1, 2008 ·San Antonio mayor Phil Hardberger was the invited luncheon speaker of the downtown Rotary Club. He spoke on July 30, 2008. San Antonio had recently suffered some economic setbacks with AT&T moving its corporate headquarters from San Antonio to Dallas. A couple of weeks later, news came that Toyota's manufacturing plant in San Antonio was suspending production of its Tundra truck line several months until demand caught up with inventory. Despite these events, the mayor highlighed some bright spots in San Antonio's economic picture.

“Philanthropic Support for UTHSC”
February 15, 2008 ·President Dr. Francisco Cigarroa of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio delivers the annual State of the University address. The address was presented on January 29, 2008 at the UTHSC. Dr. Cigarroa touches on philanthropy, which the UTHSC raised more philanthropic support in 2007 than in any fiscal year in the University's history. He also talks about capital expansion, the acquisition of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center and future initiatives.

Former US Ambassador Bob Krueger speaking on his years in Africa
November 2, 2007 · Former U.S. Ambassador Bob Krueger and his wife, Kathleen, have co-authored a book titled From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi: Our Embassy Years Living in Genocide. They along with Paul Rusesabagina, the hotel manager who is credited for saving the lives of about 1200 people during the Rwanda genocide, and who is portrayed by Don Cheadle in the Academy award nominated film Hotel Rwanda spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on October 5, 2007 about their experiences in Africa which is the basis of the book. Mr. Rusesabagina has also written an autobiography titled An Ordinary Man.

He spoke on September 20, 2007 as Hispanic Heritage Month began. Quinones has won six Emmy Awards, including his coverage of the Congo's virgin rainforest which also won the Ark Trust Wildlife Award.

August 17, 2007 · Memebers of the medical humanitarian organization, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders visited San Antonio in March 2007. At an event open to the public at the Buena Vista Theatre Building at the downtown campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio, a MSF panel talked about the challenges of reaching people caught in conflict, treating malnutrition and responding to epidemics. Texas Public Radio's news director, David Martin Davies, was the moderator.

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns
May 11, 2007 · Although he has been making documentary films for more than thirty years, Ken Burns became a household name after his most notable production, the mini-series "The Civil War." He is an Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee, and received an Emmy for this documentaries "The Civil War" in 1990, "Baseball" in 1994 and "Jazz" in 2001. His newest film, which PBS television will air in September, is titled "The War", about the sacrifices Americans in several communities gave during World War II. Burns has received criticism from Latino organizations because the film lacks any mention of the sacrifices and contributions made by minorities. Burns speaks at the City Club of Cleveland.

Iraqi Oil for Food Program
April 27, 2007 · Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul A. Volcker spoke at the City Club of Cleveland on April 13, 2007. He was chairman during the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan administrations. Under his leadership, the Federal Reserve was largely credited for ending the United States' stagflation crisis of the 1970's by limiting the growth of the money supply. Volcker talks about his investigation into the Iraqi Oil for Food program.

April 20, 2007 · The Council of American Ambassadors, based in Washington D.C. met in San Antonio on April 10, 2007. Mexico's Ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, was in San Antonio to participate in a number of events sponsored by the CAA. One of those events included a luncheon in cooperation with the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. At the luncheon, Ambassador Sarukhan was the guest speaker where he spoke about the bilateral relationship between the United States and Mexico.

April 13, 2007 · The American Bar Association's Litigation Section held their annual Spring meeting in San Antonio April 11-14, 2007. One of the sessions included a panel discussion comprised of three of the attorneys who were involved in what was seen as "the Case of the Century", the case U.S. vs. Skilling and Lay or more commonly called "The Enron Case." On the panel were Bruce Collins, defense attorney for Ken Lay, Chairman of Enron who died at the age of 64 in 2006 and was awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud; Daniel Petrocelli, defense attorney for Jeffrey Skilling who was sentenced to 24 years, four months in prison after also being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud. The Government's prosecuting attorney on the panel was Kathryn Ruemmler. The panel discussion was held on April 12, 2007. Chair of the Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association, Kim Askew who is a partner with the law firm of Hugh Luce, LLP in Dallas, moderates the discussion.
