Myths Hurt Organ Donations

April 20, 2007 · It could be considered the ultimate waste - a human kidney, liver, pancreas, intestines, heart and lungs that could save lives. But they won't. Organ transplantation is one of the greatest medical advances of the twentieth century. It is a routine and safe surgery that gives life to people suffering from organ failure. But perhaps no other surgery has generated the amount of myth, mystery than organ donation. It seems simple enough: Donate organs. Save lives. Yet everyday lives are unnecessarily lost due to misinformation about the donation of organs. In 2005, nearly 6,500 people died waiting for an organ transplant. Texas Public Radio's Deirdre Saravia exposed myth from reality on organ transplantation.

Remembering the Texas City Disaster, Sixty Years Later
Windows Media

April 16, 2007 · Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color line on April 15, 1947, but the next morning, terrible news from Galveston Bay chased that story from the headlines and dominated America's consciousness for days. "It was like hell come to earth," witnesses said. 'It' became known as the Texas City Disaster: a ship docked at Texas City and loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer exploded with such fury that seething hot metal was thrown for miles in all directions destroying part of the town and igniting many of the petrochemical plants and refineries nearby. The death toll would reach nearly 600, and it remains America's worst industrial accident.
On the 60th anniversary of that terrible disaster, reporter Wayne Bell finds that, especially since September 11, 2001, survivors' memories focus less on the destruction and more on what we learned about humanity in those dark days. Note: This report was originally broadcast in 2003 (now updated for 2007) and was given the Edward R. Murrow Award.
