Monday, February 8

Schreiner Monday Night Fiction takes place on February 8 at 7 p.m. in the Scarle-Philips Room, Logan Library, Schreiner University. The University of the Incarnate Word’s Religious Studies Department is proud to announce the 8th Annual Pierre Lecture, "Solidarity and Collaboration: The Moral Foundations of Health Care Reform,” presented by Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, President & CEO, Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHAUSA.) The Pierre Lecture will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday, February 8, in UIW’s Rosenberg SkyRoom. The event is free and open to the public.

The Archaeological Institute of America-Southwest Texas Archaeological Society present two events about Ancient Egypt by Dr. Cheryl Ward, Dept. of History, Coastal Carolina University. On Monday, February 8, there will be a screening of the documentary “Building Pharaoh's Ship" followed by a discussion of the challenges of building the reconstruction of an ancient Egyptian vessel and of promoting a scholarly enterprise via entertainment media. On Tuesday, February 9, there will be a lecture on Cedar, Frankincense and Spoils of War: Seafaring in Ancient Egypt: People usually consider the ancient Egyptians as focused on the Nile, but recent research and discovery at archaeological sites throughout Egypt and the Levant suggests this perception is out-dated. All lectures events will be held in Chapman Auditorium on the Trinity campus at 7:30 p.m. Lectures are free and open to the general public.

 

Tuesday, February 9

The Guadalupe Country Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will hold a monthly meeting on February 9. Botanist Matt Turner, author of Remarkable Plants of Texas, will discuss the history of plant use. The Society meets at the Library, 798 Schertz Parkway, in Schertz. The University of the Incarnate Word presents the 7th Annual Red Dress Fashion Show & Health Fair, Tuesday, February 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in UIW’s Marian Hall Ballroom. This annual event promotes cardiac health in women and features fashions designed by UIW students. The event boasts heart healthy appetizers and a variety of special activities and exhibits while providing information on the importance of maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle. The “Heart & Soul: Jazz Up Your Life,” Red Dress Fashion Show & Health Fair is held in support of the American Heart Association and their Go Red campaign. The event is free and open to the public.

On February 9 the Riverside Nature Center will host the February Brown Bag Lunch and Learn at 11:30 a.m. The topic is “Management and Conservation of Native Texas Fish”, presented by Dr. Gary Garrett, Director of the Watershed Program of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Dr. Garrett has authored more than 70 scientific publications on the subject of native fish recovery. He is a member of several endangered species recovery teams. The UTSA Small Business Development Center offers a class on February 9 titled “Quick Books Pro Set Up.” This course introduces the basic features of QuickBooks and provides an opportunity for hands-on practice. We discuss the information the business owner needs to track, and how to enter and track it in QuickBooks. The class is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UTSA Downtown campus. The UTSA Small Business Development Center offers a class on February 9 titled “The Power of Email Marketing.” The session covers best practices in email marketing - what it is, why it works so well, and how to use it in your business planning and strategy to achieve specific goals. Topics will also include list building, how to avoid spam, tips for scheduling and examples of successful email campaigns and how they were set up to build business and drive sales. The Small Business Association presents a free workshop on February 9 titled “Access to Capital.” Learn how to access needed capital by attending our briefings! Instructors will define the importance of credit, planning, and preparation – three key elements in securing a small business loan. In addition, learn of SBA’s loan guaranty programs and how SBA can be an option for your financing needs through participating lenders and credit unions. SBA assists eligible start-ups and existing businesses with financing as well as providing business counseling and training in partnership with various Resource Partners; i.e., Small Business Development Centers, Service Corps of Retired Executives and Women’s Business Centers. The Academic World Quest 2010 takes place on February 9. The Academic World Quest is an annual knowledge-based competition with question focusing on international affairs, current events, global economy, world history and other general knowledge about the world. This year Country Focuses will be on the Islands of the Caribbean & The Sultanate of Oman. Wednesday, February 10

The UTSA Small Business Development Center offers a class on February 10 titled “Business Start Up Essentials.” Topics discussed in this class include: choosing a name and legal structure, your responsibilities and requirements as they pertain to local and federal entities, and business start up costs. If you are considering opening a small business this is your starting point. The class is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Helotes Municipal Offices, 12951 Bandera Rd. The World Affairs Council of San Antonio presents a program titled “Taiwan - U.S. Relations” on February 10 at Club Giraud. The lecture will be given by Consul General Joseph Chen, Taiwan Consulate General to Houston. He was Secretary to the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Panama and former Deputy Director General to the Department of General Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The South Texas Women’s Business Center will host a class on February 10 about filing your taxes. The San Antonio Children’s Museum hosts Snake Farm Day on Thursday, February 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Get up close and personal with the creeping, crawling, and slithering animals that make their home at the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo! feThe San Antonio Children’s Museum is located at 305 E. The UTSA Small Business Development Center offers a class on February 11 titled “The Business Plan.” Business advisors will teach you the components of a business plan and provide a written example and outline for you to follow. Start up cost and projections to help prepare you for your loan application will be discussed. Other benefits of a business plan: It will assist you in developing strategies, along with your marketing and sales plans. Bethany Heinesh, editor of The Hill Country Weekly, will be the guest speaker at the February 11th meeting of the Kendall County Area Democratic Women. The meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. and will be held at the Boerne Holiday Inn Express hotel. The focus of Ms. Heinesh’s presentation will be effective communication and how to make the most of small market media. Friday, February 12

Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art will commemorate their 28th Anniversary with a Meet the Artists reception on an Open House. Greenhouse is featuring new works by approximately 35 of their gallery artists, many of who will be in attendance during the celebratory weekend. The public is invited to attend a weekend of celebration beginning with an Artists Reception on Friday, February 12 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm followed by an open house on Saturday, February 13, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art is located at 6496 N. The San Antonio Dance Umbrella presents Dance at Radius, a monthly showcase and forum for dance in San Antonio. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. on February 12th in the Radius Building, 106 Auditorium Circle across from the Municipal Auditorium. The February Diversity Dance event will feature The Third Coast Rhythm Project’s RPM Youth Ensemble, the Northwest Vista College Repertory Dance Ensemble and the Wongai Let’s Go dance company. The Company Theatre continues the 2009-2010 Dinnerbox Season with the world premiere of their newest comedy. The History of Texas…in one darn easy lesson! will be performed for two weekends only as part of the Dinnerbox Series (presenting live theatre in local restaurants). The History of Texas is an hysterical, historical hayride through 500 years of Texas history in 5000 seconds by only three actors! Chocolate Fantasy Weekend takes place in Kerrville February 12 and 14th. The Chocolate Fantasy Elegant Dinner & Auction is on February 12, from 6-10 p.m. The Chocolate Fantasy Extravaganza is on February 14, 1-4 p.m. It will feature an all you can eat chocolate buffet, chocolate fountain, chocolate gifts and goodies. The SoL Center continues with their Friday Night Cooking School on Friday, February 12 for a Valentine Dinner. Chef Carol-lee Fisher provides spirited and expert cooking instruction. Art2heart presents Journey Musical Friday and Saturday, February 12 and 13. The Journey Musical is a singing, dancing musical depicting how "music " was used to tie the world together. From Swing to Blues, African and Spirituals, the show features artists the Journey Band and the Birundi African Youth Choir. The show takes place at 1325 Harper rd, in Kerrville, Texas at 7 p.m.

The fifth annual Gospel Concert, “Many Voices, One Soul,” will be held in the Trinity Baptist Church sanctuary, 800 Jackson Road, in Kerrville, on Friday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. The concert will feature both adult and youth choral groups, solos, readings and youth praise dancing. Participants are church members from Barnett Chapel United Methodist Church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church and guests from San Antonio and the Hill Country. Saturday, February 13

The San Antonio Children’s Museum hosts Macrolab: Monthly programming supporting the sciences on Saturday, February 13 from noon to 3 p.m. This month’s Macrolab topic is Engineering 101. Sponsored by Bain Medina Bain Inc. and ASCE Young Members Prepare will prepare for National Engineering Week (February 14th - February 20th) by becoming an engineer! Build a tower out of marshmallows, construct a toy that’s fun to break and create your own geo dome. The San Antonio Children’s Museum is located at 305 E. Looking Glass Productions present the San Antonio Looking Glass Show on February 13 and 14 at the Live Oak Civic Center. Schreiner University will kick off its annual Todd’s Teddy Bear Drive at the men’s basketball game against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m., Saturday, February 13. Anyone who donates a new stuffed animal at the game will receive a free snow cone and a rubber bracelet. The Teddy Bear Drive honors Todd Schwennesen, a Schreiner student who wanted to help the children he met while undergoing cancer treatment at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He planned to deliver bears to every cancer patient at the center, but he lost his battle with cancer before he could complete his mission. Since the first Teddy Bear Drive three years ago, Schreiner students, faculty and staff, and community members have donated more than 2,000 stuffed animals that have brought love and hope to seriously ill children. From February 13 through March 31, new stuffed animals can be dropped off at the Student Activities office on the first floor of the Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center on the Schreiner campus.

Amor en el Corazón A Valentine's Day Concert & Baile featuring local music legend Flaco Jimenez and lots of dancing takes place on February 13 at Main Plaza. Music is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free, and reserved table seating will be available (15 per seat). The Conjunto Heritage Taller is taking applications for the new bajo sexto, guitar classes for students of all ages on Saturday mornings, from 11:00am – 2pm at our studio located at 725 S. Presa. The classes are scheduled to begin on February 13, 2010, cost of the classes will be $40.00 per month and student must have their own instruments. Boerne’s Second Saturday Art and Wine, February 13th. The monthly event from 4:00 to 8:00 PM is composed of an eclectic collection of galleries and other venues featuring an evolving array of art in all media. Lifesavers, a Valentine Adoption Event, takes place on Saturday, February 13 at the PetSmart on Hwy. 281 and Evans Rd. from 11 am to 4 pm. This Adoption Event will feature dogs from Animal Care Services who are at great risk. These dogs have all been spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and their adoption fee is only $50.

The Freethinkers Association of Central Texas present a Valentine's Date Night Concert "Roy Zimmerman, Real American” on Saturday, February 13, at 8 p.m. at The First Unitarian Universalist Church. "Real American" is 90 minutes of Zimmerman's funny songs and comic commentary, a tuneful examination of the American political landscape in the era of Hope and Change. “Get to the Point,” a second Saturday program at Eisenhower Park takes place on February 13th from 10 a.m. to noon. Do you have an interest in arrow points and other stone artifacts? Join local flintknappers in demonstrations, examining displays and trying your hand at making an arrow point. Reservations are recommended. The second Saturday monthly “Beginners’ Bird Walk” of the San Antonio Audubon Society (SAAS) will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 13. Chocolate Day at the San Antonio Botanical Garden takes place on Saturday, February 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Garden will celebrate the story of chocolate just in time for Valentine’s Day with food demonstrations, samples of chocolate treats, informational booths and chocolate plants. Sunday, February 14

San Antonio College Theatre and Speech Communication Department presents Matt Crowley’s “The Boys in the Band,” directed by Paula Rodriguez. The first American play to deal with gay issues, “The Boys in the Band” begins with a simple birthday celebration in the 1960s and quickly evolves into a vicious party game that reveals the characters’ inner demons. The final performance is on Sunday, February 14 at 2:30 p.m. at the McCreless Theatre.

V-Day San Antonio 2010, a benefit production of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, takes place on Monday and Tuesday, February 15 and 16 at Jump-Start, 108 Blue Star. Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio is in great need of a few groups to volunteer on Fridays throughout the build, but especially on the Fridays in February and March. Allegro Stage Company presents Fire on the Bayou beginning at the Woodlawn Theatre through February 28. Celebrate Mardi Gras with San Antonio’s newest musical theatre company. This “Cajun Voodoo Musical” is set the mysterious backwaters of Louisiana and mixes music, dancing and a little bit of magic to conjure up a spirited romantic fantasy. A sinister con artist, mismatched young lovers, and the legendary voodoo queen Marie Laveau are among the show’s many colorful characters. The Office of Cultural Affairs and the San Antonio Film Commission are sponsoring The San Antonio Neighborhood Film Project to celebrate the opening of three new neighborhood discovery tours. The three tours are the Westside "Murals y Más" tour ; the Eastside "Echoes of the Eastside" tour; and the "Downtown North River" tour stretching from downtown to the new Museum Reach river extension. The San Antonio Film Project is a film competition for local student and non-students filmmakers to submit original pieces by February 18, 2010 that capture the flavor and authenticity of each neighborhood profiled in the tour. Films can be from any genre, and range from anything from music videos to inspiring documentaries. Two prizes will be awarded for each of the three neighborhood tours. Prizewinners will be announced at the screening of the films in the spring of 2010 at the San Antonio Museum of Art. More information, rules, and entry forms can be found at www.sahearts.com.

The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) is offering grief support programs this spring for children ages 3-5, 6-18, and young adults ages 18-24 beginning February 1.
