President Obama announced in his State of the Union Address, and followed up with details in late January, a $215 million plan to better design drugs and therapies to work on individual patients rather than average ones.
Precision medicine isn't new, it has been used on cancerpatients and other ailments already. This field uses genetic information from specific patient's disease to better cater treatments. These efforts promise better results and fewer side effects. For instance, Chemotherapy and radiation do widespread damage to the body while they are used on cancers.
Dr. Greg Aune at the University of Texas Health Science Center is a principal researcher at the Greehey Children's Cancer Research Center and was there when the President made his announcement. $70 million of the proposed budget will go to cancer research.
