There are at least three public statues of Abraham Lincoln in New York City. Today one could think that New York loved President Lincoln and always have, and they would be wrong.
A sizable portion of New York City loathed him, supported the south, talked about secession from the Union itself and rioted in the streets in opposition to the Union.
It's worth remembering this episode in American history because it shows us the messy reality of 1860 America.
