Composer Matthew Dunne and the Cavatina Duo visited with Barry Brake in the KPAC studios on Friday, and shared some brand new music at the same time.
Dunne’s new work for guitar and flute, “Three Artisans,” was written in tribute to Tal Perkes, former Principal Flute of the San Antonio Symphony, who died too young in 2012, at age 51.
“The first movement is called ‘The Painter,’ and this is an homage to Tal's love of painting,” Dunne explained in the studio. “[Tal] used to paint quite a bit, especially when he lived in Spain… That movement, it's kind of it's got a little gypsy jazz section to it, which has kind of an improvisatory feel… and Tal used to describe his painting as improvising a little bit. So that’s how this piece came to be.”
The Cavatina Duo is Denis Azabagic (guitar), and Eugenia Moliner (flute). The two have performed together for two decades. They will premiere Dunne’s full work on Sunday, January 27 at 3:15 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, as part of the San Antonio Chamber Music Society’s concert series.
