Texas Public Radio's "The Source" is hosting a series of forums with candidates leading up the 2018 midterm elections. In Texas, more than 30 racesare in runoffs for a party's official nomination. Early voting for the May 22 primary runoffelections begins May 14.
Candidates Matt Beebe and Steve Allison are still in the running for a shot at the Republican nomination for Texas House District 121. The seat is currently held by House Speaker Joe Straus, who is stepping down after five terms.
District 121 includes the Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills and Olmos Park neighborhoods, and stretches up past Loop 1604 to encompass several Bexar County communities Northeast of San Antonio.
Republican voters decide on May 22 which candidate will represent the party when facing off with Democrat Celina Montoya in the November general election.
Matt Beebe is a small business owner specializing in information technology and cybersecurity, and a veteran of the United States Air Force. This is not Beebe's first shot at the seat. He challenged Straus in the 2012 and 2014 GOP primaries. In the March 2018 primaries, he received almost one-third of the vote.
Business attorney Steve Allison captured 26 percent of the vote in the March primary. Previously, Allison served on the Alamo Heights School Board for 12 years and spent three terms as president. He was also a vice chair on the board for VIA Metropolitan Transit.
Allison declined to participate in this candidate forum.
