Rancheras To Chamber Music To Blues: Your Weekend's Here!

From blues to chamber music to ranchera singers, the weekend's filled with neat things to do.

First off, head to the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center for a documentary directed by Jorqe Sandoval on Las Tesoros.

IF YOU GO What: Las Tesoros De San Antonio documentary screening Where: Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe St. When: 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 Cost:  $5

"Las Tesoras de San Antonio are a group of three women. They were singers of yesteryear, here in San Antonio,” he said. “They recorded all over the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean."

Their heyday as individual artists was back in the 1940s and 1950s. One by one, each gave up their careers, becoming mothers or professional women. But in 2001, they began performing again — this time together, as Las Tesoros.

Now, Sandoval has turned their lives into a music-filled documentary that will be screened at the Guadalupe tonight.

"They're just amazing women, and they still perform," he said.

Before the screening, pan dulce and coffee will be served.

Also, Friday through Sunday, head to the  Carver Community Cultural Center, where Danielle King said they're singing the blues. It’s called “The Eastwood Project.”

IF YOU GO What: The Eastwood Project Where: Little Carver Civic Center, 226 N. Hackberry When: 8 p.m. Saturday Cost:  $17-$34

"It is a great night of music and memories that everybody's going to enjoy," she said.

The memories, she said, are those of the Chitlin' Circuit's Eastwood Country Club, where major acts performed. Fats Domino, T-Bone Walker, Pearl Bailey, B.B. King, Tina Turner and many others all played there.

"Back in its day, it was the place to be," she said.

King said it will be a night full of music, and blues fans will hear songs that they will well remember, including”My Baby” and “Down Home Blues.”

A five-piece blues band will provide the music for the singers.

"Oh, do they play some great music,” she said. “And people can get up and dance.”

Camerata San Antonio

Also Friday through Sunday, chamber group Camerata San Antonio is playing.

"We're are doing ‘CamerataSalon, Tricentennial Edition.’ We're performing in Boerne, Kerrville and San Antonio this weekend," cellist Ken Freudigman said.

IF YOU GO What: Camerata San Antonio, Camerata Salon Where: Boerne, Kerrville, and San Antonio When: 7:30 p.m. Friday in Boerne, 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Kerrville, 3 p.m. Sunday in San Antonio Cost:  $8-$20

The first stop is at Boerne's First United Methodist Church on Friday, then at Kerrville's First Presbyterian, and finally, on Sunday, the chamber will be at the University of the Incarnate Word's concert hall. The program features Freudigman’s cello, two violins and a viola, and for this salon, piano.

"We have our guest pianist, Viktor Valkov. He's just a joy to work with and you should come out and hear him," he said.
