While San Antonio has come a long way since ticketing people living in the streets, there are still many issues to address when it comes to the city's homeless population.
New initiatives working to humanize the homeless, like the police department's Homeless Outreach Positive Encounters(H.O.P.E.) team, coexist with traditional services provided by various shelters and city services.
With the help of volunteers, the South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless conducts a yearly "point-in-time count" to track San Antonio's homeless population.
Veteran and youth homelessness have decreased since last year, according to thelatest numbers, and while the total count is also down, there are still at least 2,700 displaced persons living in Bexar County.
