A Holiday Tradition Often Confused for a Cliché

My name is Susan Albert and a favorite Christmas tradition is Chinese food and a movie.

Growing up Jewish in New York, we did not celebrate Christmas and our family Hanukah celebration was enjoyable but fairly low-key. On Christmas, everything was closed and there wasn’t much for us to do.

Most Christmases found us at the Chinese restaurant (one of the few dining options that remained open) and then we were off to the movie theater. There is a cliché that this is the way Jews celebrate Christmas. It’s not a cliché – it is a tradition!
