Campaign Waged To Ban Bags In San Antonio

A campaign has begun to create a plastic bag ban in San Antonio.  It’s headed up by Bexar County Young Democrats.

President Gabrien Gregory says they have three goals.  One is to educate and encourage people to go about their lifestyle a little differently.

“We want to encourage people to reuse instead of picking up the same single use plastic bag every day that they go to the HEB or the grocery store,” says Gregory.

They want to encourage the San Antonio City Council and Mayor to look into alternatives and ways that they can impact a cleaner environment.

The Bexar County Young Democrats will also be lobbying the City Council to support an amicus brief in response to the Texas Supreme Court’s deliberation on the city of Laredo’s bag ordinance case.

Gregory says you can sign a petition on Change.org under “Plastic Bag Free San Antonio.”

But more than that, “we encourage people to actually write letters to their council members,” says Gregory. “We want to encourage people to meet with their council member and say hey, you know, this is affecting our environment, this is what we need to do about it.”
