Eileen came to Texas Public Radio in 2010 after taking some time off to go back to school. She graduated Magna cum Laude in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from UTSA, where she also studied business and architecture.

Eileen is a veteran journalist with a long history of investigative and feature reporting in San Antonio and Houston. She earned three National Headliners Awards, two Katie Awards and several awards from the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, and the State Bar of Texas.

Eileen enjoys going to the theater and loves classic movies, museums, travel and volunteering. At home, she enjoys a crackling fire in the fireplace, cooking with gas, and snuggling with her young grandchildren.

Eileen earned a Black Belt in tang Soo Do Karate in 2003, and since then she has decided that yoga is more her speed.

Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla To Speak In Bordeaux, France

San Antonio’s poet laureate is on her way this week to Bordeaux, France, to perform at the International Conference on Interlanguage.

Dr. Carmen Tafolla’s poetry has been heard in countries all over the world, but she said she was invited to the linguistic conference based on her mastery of code-switching. She says this is the natural progression of language, and it happens all the time:

Could City And Public Space Design Help Solve Obesity Crisis?

The Texas Public Health Association's Built Environment Conference on March 19 will address concerns about the lack of exercise designed into public spaces, and how design may contribute to obesity in the 21st Century.

Architects and designers will come away with a toolbox of healthier design practices so that the people who use their buildings have a greater opportunity for moving around.

The new biggest killer in society is obesity.

F.I.S.H. Exhibit Gets Needed Repairs After February Windstorm

It's time this weekend to go back down to the Museum Reach and see the repaired F.I.S.H. art exhibit.  Artists from Colorado and Florida are in town to repair the fiberglass art installation damaged in February’s windstorm.

Sustained winds over a 16-hour period and gusts of up to 64 mph on February 25th knocked out power and damaged trees and buildings. Stronger than the force of some tropical storms, the wind also battered the F.I.S.H. exhibit along the Museum Reach of the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Cross-Cultural Expert Brought In For Lackland Court-Martial

A Lackland judge is hearing the case against a former Air Force instructor accused of rape.

Staff Sgt. Eddy Soto, formerly with the 323rd Training Squadron, pleaded guilty to five of the charges against him, including sexual assault, wrongful sexual contact, lying to officials, and having unprofessional relationships with trainees.

Soto’s court-martial opened in January with a request from the government to postpone the proceedings so it could bring in a cross-cultural expert.

Scooter Store Employees Looking For Answers About Unemployment Benefits

Scooter Store employees have plenty of questions about their furloughs late last week.

Scooter Store CEO Marty Landon reportedly sent out a blanket email at the end of the day last Friday that told all employees not to come back to work unless they received further instructions.

Employees were left dazed and confused, entering their spring break not knowing where their next paycheck would come from.

How Teachers Can Fail Chemistry But Still Teach It In Schools

San Antonio Representative Mike Villarreal has filed a bill to bring transparency to licensing procedures for school teachers.

Right now teachers take a composite exam with several different parts – including all the core subjects – but as long as their overall score is passing, the teachers don’t have to pass all of those subjects to be certified to teach them.

Chamber Members/Business Leaders Back From SA To D.C. Trip

San Antonio business leaders have returned home optimistic after a week-long lobbying trip to Washington.

Business leaders, along with officials from the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, target certain projects and issues every year as Congress starts looking at new legislation.

Unemployment Slightly Up In Texas, But Still Lower Than A Year Ago

Unemployment figures released Friday had bad news and good news for Texas. 

The good news is that over the past year, unemployment in the state has declined almost a full percentage point and remains below the national rate of 7.9 percent for January.

The bad news is that unemployment rose slightly in Texas for the month of January to 6.3 percent; prior to January, the jobless rate had been declining for six months.

Villarreal & Van De Putte File Bills To Protect Hemisfair Redevelopment

Area across from the Torch Of Friendship by the Convention Center is being considered for additional park space.

Two San Antonio  lawmakers have introduced companion bills at the State Capitol to facilitate the redevelopment of Hemisfair.

State law requires a public vote anytime park land is leased or sold to protect the park acreage from being reduced in size, but the Hemisfair master plan calls for establishing more park space than exists under its current configuration.
