Mayor Julián Castro and Councilman Diego Bernal Join City Manager Sheryl Sculley at Hotel Havana.

It was one year ago this week that the city began offering free parking on Tuesdays in city garages. While the city may be losing a small amount of revenue, officials believe the economic impact has offset any losses.

"It’s really for the residents and the small businesses," said District one City Councilman Diego Bernal, whose district encompasses much of downtown. "This is a way for us to help return the city to the residents of San Antonio so they can share it equally with tourists."

A public opinion poll conducted by faculty members at the University of Texas in association with the Texas Tribune found that the economy, immigration and education are top of mind for most, yet water registers as a top issue with only 4 percent.

Javan Rhinoceros

For Huyen Hoang and his identical twin brother -- who also has the same name -- the plight of the Asian rhinoceros was all but unknown, until one day a news report featured images of a Javan rhino poached for it’s horn.

Like many of us, the Portland State University undergraduate was unaware of the increasing black market for rhinoceros horn, and the keratin inside it. The price has jumped so high it at times rivals gold; by some estimates reaching $65,000 a kilogram.

Fort Sam Houston Museum Gets New Home At Quadrangle

The existing Fort Sam Houston Museum was built in 1905 and takes visitors through the history of the Army in San Antonio from establishment of the post in 1845 to present day JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.

Much like other areas of the rapidly-growing military presence in San Antonio, the museum has outgrown its space, and the building was old and deemed not up to standards. Credit Ryan Loyd / TPR
Couples will gather on the steps of the Bexar County Courthouse to exchange vows in what is a San Antonio tradition.

The pastor who came under fire last year for his remarks at the Valentine’s Day ceremonies at the Bexar County Courthouse will be allowed to perform marriages again this year.

Last Valentine’s Day, a video recording captured his not so loving comments to same-sex couples who showed up to the midnight ceremony. In the recording, he can be heard saying, "If people are here just trying to be repulsive and offensive to people, you'll have to deal with God one of these days after this."
