The Holly & The Steinway: The Piano As A Christmas Tradition

Think back to how families used to celebrate the Holidays. For some of us, it was sitting in front of the TV watching a Charlie Brown special, and going back another twenty years, Dad would play disc-jockey, keeping the records spinning on the Hi-Fi. Back another generation, families grouped around the piano with someone, who hopefully spent some time practicing, played Christmas carols for the mini-multitude to sing along.

How The Newtown Shooting Is Affecting School Safety In Texas

School districts in Texas are required by law to conduct and report a safety audit to prepare for emergency situations on campus. The Newtown shootings have given these preparations a greater sense of urgency.

Texas Matters: After reviewing school district safety audits, the attorney general's office found that 78 Texas school districts were not compliant with the law. The Newtown tragedy is also having an effect in San Antonio school districts, where two students who were making jokes about bomb threats and shootings on their own campuses were arrested. Texas Monthly crowns its 2012 Bum Steer of the Year: Lance Armstrong.

County Commissioner Paul Elizondo Added To Iconic Mi Tierra Mural

It wouldn’t be El Mercado without Mi Tierra Café and Panadería. The iconic restaurant has served presidents, ambassadors, celebrities, local leaders and generations of families who established the area in the 19th Century.

On Thursday, the famous restaurant honored another key figure in the development of local culture, Bexar County Commissioner Paul Elizondo.

The 83rd Texas Legislative Session Begins on January 8th December 20, 2012 There's no doubt about it. Federal dollars pay for a lot of things in Texas. This year's state budget included $33 billion in federal money. Overall federal spending in Texas totaled more than $220 billion in 2010.

Visually Impaired Girl Gets Early Christmas Gift: The Ability To Read

Seven-year-old Kaitlyn Brown has a very limited field of vision, but thanks to a new machine that magnifies images, she will be able to see things she never could before -- like the color of her favorite toy's eyes.
Christmas came early for one local visually impaired 7-year old. Kaitlyn Brown is the lucky recipient of a machine from nonprofit sight savers and The University of Texas Health Science Center. The machine can magnify objects up to 79 times which allows her to read and learn like other kids her age.

It was habit in the nineteenth and early twentieth century to present operas, whatever their original language, in the language of the host country. Playbills of the past are filled with references toWagner's Il Sigfrido, or Mozart’s Il Fluto Magico, or Figaro's Hochzeit. The idea was, of course, to fill the seats. This is especially important in comedy, because what was the point if nobody got the jokes!

Healthcare and Bioscience Growing By Billions In San Antonio

From 2009 to 2011 the healthcare and bioscience industries in San Antonio grew by nearly $5 billion according to a new report  by doctors Richard Butler and Mary Stefl from Trinity University.

The study shows the comprehensive impact in 2011 was $29.2 billion, up from $24.5 billion in 2009. Butler said that more than 40,000 new jobs have been added over the past decade to those industries, fueling the city's growth.

Holiday Pops For All Ages With San Antonio Symphony & Children's Chorus

There are three chances to go to Holiday Pops and hear seasonal favorites with Akiko Fujimoto and the San Antonio Symphony featuring guest vocalists Cristal Smith, Eric Schmidt, and the Children's Chorus of San Antonio this weekend.

The first two concerts are at the Majestic Theatre and include holiday classics by Leroy Anderson, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and John Rutter.

This fishing boat was being pounded by waves in a cove near Ocean Beach when coastal law enforcement authorities found it in the early morning.

Authorities in Southern California are confronting the rise in maritime smuggling of illegal immigrants and drugs. If the nation plunges over the fiscal cliff, it would have an immeasurable impact on the border. Navajos have been especially vulnerable to questionable car sales tactics and Arizona school districts are grappling with a federal mandate to improve English language instruction.

$15 Million Christmas Miracle For San Antonio Food Bank

With the help of a handful of partners, the San Antonio Food Bank will no longer have to use existing funds to pay for its warehouse expansion project.

A combined $15 million – the largest campaign ever conducted by the food bank – will completely fund the project, leaving the food bank leaders to use existing money to meet the day-to-day needs of people.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who also contributed to the goal personally, joked about his presence at the press conference to announce the news.
