It’s a tradition for the solemn U.S. Army Caisson Platoon to march in local events, even ones as festive as the parade that signals the beginning of rodeo season in San Antonio.

Lt. Col. Wayne Shanks at Fort Sam Houston said the platoon’s appearance helps keep the Army connected to the community.

Northside Independent School District could see a bond election next year as district officials push off the need for one in 2013. Northside has seen about 3,000 additional students to the district ever year and the student population is now close to 100,000 students and 110 schools.

The bad news is that average prices for gasoline shot up over the last week by almost 15 cents per gallon in Texas and nationally.

Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan works for GasBuddy -- an application and website that allows users to post gas prices -- and said the steep hike in wholesale gas prices may also have been spawned by higher oil prices, but he believes the increase could also be related to a general uptick in the economy.

District 4 City Councilman Rey Saldaña will soon officially announce his bid for re-election to city council.

The 26 year old is finishing his freshman term on the council, having worked toward increased police presence, supported the city’s Pre-K 4 SA measure and pushed for the 500-acre renovation of a former landfill -- now the Pearsall Park -- in southwest San Antonio.

USAA has teamed up with Texas A&M to find out why people take their eyes off the road when they don’t have to.

The cooperative survey is an attitudinal study designed to learn what behaviors distract drivers, and why they continue to engage in distracted driving even when they know it’s dangerous.

Texas lawmakers are looking to save Texas state parks from closing down by making sure that taxpayer funds intended for state parks get there. 

When you go to a sporting goods store and buy a canoe there is a little tax that supports the Texas park system, since a person would be likely to enjoy paddling that canoe on Texas state waterways.

Over the years the state diverted that park tax money and held it in order to balance the state budget on paper.

In the current state budget, $184 million pegged for parks was diverted to help balance the overall budget.
