SAWS Forced to Adjust Water Management Plan Ahead of Schedule

San Antonio’s Water Plan was last updated in 2009, but changes in demographics and population have made it necessary to update the plan now instead of waiting the usual five years.

The San Antonio Water System is planning for a 1.2 percent annual population growth; an increase of 20,000 people a year. Vice President Greg Flores said SAWS has begun its investment in a new desalination plant for Bexar County’s future.

The headquarters to the 37th Training Wing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The courts-martial are being held inside this building, where the base's legal offices and courtroom are housed.

Staff Sgt. Jason Manko is accused of violating Air Force regulations by developing a relationship with a female trainee. He came to court this morning prepared to enter a guilty plea on the charges against him.

Manko admitted to developing the relationship with a woman over a period of several months during the spring and summer of 2011, until he finally invited her to his home.

Bond Renovations Begin on the First of 22 SAISD Schools

SAISD Interim Superintendent Sylvester Perez speaks at Bella Cameron Elementary. The school is one of 22 to receive major upgrades and renovations to the campus.

After spending nearly two years on planning, design and gathering community input, the money from the SAISD’s 2010 Bond is starting to dig deep.

Some of the 22 SAISD facilities receiving drastic renovations are 100 years old. SAISD Interim Superintendent Sylvester Perez said updates will allow students to have the same opportunities as other school districts.

“Not just modernizing them," said Perez, " but meeting the educational needs of the 21st century."

Gen. Edward Rice, who leads the Air Education and Training Command in San Antonio, has met with select members of Congress in the ongoing sex scandal at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

Rice said unprofessional relationships at basic military training will not be tolerated.

Rice promised to establish and maintain an environment that he says is consistent with the high standards of professional conduct that the Air Force demands of instructors.

Pre-K 4 SA Campaign Using Current Preschoolers to Send Message

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro visits preschoolers at San Antonio College’s Early Child Development Center.

The Pre-K 4 SA campaign is launching a video showing preschoolers at San Antonio College’s Early Childhood Development Center talking about their school experience and asking voters for support.

The Pre-K initiative would add one-eighth of a cent to the sales tax generating $31 million per year to fund pre-K for 22,000 4-year-olds in the city. Mayor Julián Castro said Pre-K 4 SA would be the first of its kind in the state.

The biggest jazz weekend of the year gets started tonight with Jazz'SAlive After Dark at the St. Anthony. The evening will be full of surprises - no one knows who might show up for the jam session.

The 29th Annual Jazz'SAlive main event starts at noon on Saturday with Midtown Jazz Sound performing. Later in the day, Urban 15 makes an appearance, along with Bela Fleck and the Marcus Roberts Trio, featuring Jason Marsalis and Rodney Jordan.

San Antonio Agencies Get New Ideas to Achieve No-Kill Status

The Animal Defense League, a no-kill shelter working to make San Antonio a no-kill city, gives dogs like this a safe place to live while finding them a forever home.

Two weeks ago at the Animal Defense League, 33 new residents were rescued from the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services. The dogs were orphaned by the death of their owner, and the ADL found that they had been well cared for and were adoptable.

However, not all dogs are so lucky. Spokesman Hugo Vital said ADL actively works on getting more foster homes for pets.
