Another Lackland Training Instructor Accused in Sex Scandal

Another Air Force instructor under investigation is headed to an Article 32 hearing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland this morning.

Staff Sgt. Eddy Soto of the 323rd Training Squadron is accused of rape and sexual assault in the case of one former trainee and of sexual assault against another. He also is accused of lying to officials and committing adultery, violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Southwest ISD Seeking $165 Million Bond From Voters

Southwest ISD graduated just under 600 students in 2010, but this year the district has grown by 600 students.

"We normally, for the first ten years, saw between 2.75 percent to about 4 percent," said SWISD Superintendent Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft, but he also said enrollment has spiked over the last couple of years, increasing to six percent over time.

First part of Sixmile Creek Drainage Improvements Nearing Completion

South Side residents got some relief from flooding and from some of the related construction as officials announced the completion of the first section of the Sixmile Creek Flood Control Project.

The project is part of Bexar County’s $500 million capital improvement campaign, and the first section to open cost $2.7 million.

Visitors Bureau Launches Tourism Ambassador Program to Better Sell City

Slides at the front of a decorated gymnasium inside the Mission Concepción Sports Complex give guests an idea just how many visitors are coming to San Antonio.

Tourism brings in over $10 billion per year, and one out of every eight employees in San Antonio work in the industry. City leaders figured that's a lot of San Antonians greeting a lot of guests, so they adopted a program to help prepare those who are most involved with visitors.

Former Councilman Frank Wing Dead at 75

This photo of former Councilman Frank Wing dated 1990-1992.

Wing served San Antonio for 16 years in Council District 4, from 1977 to 1993.  He served under four mayoral administrations – first under Lila Cockrell, then Henry Cisneros, Lila Cockrell again, and finally Nelson Wolff.

Wing was one of the first council members elected from a single-member district. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said Wing took office during a time when ethnic tensions were strained, and his effect on San Antonio was extensive.

Pride Center San Antonio Providing New Home to LGBTQ Community

San Antonio is one the few major cities in the country without a dedicated LGBTQ community center. While there were several attempts in the past, a collective of community members is laying the ground work to establish a new one.

The Pride Center San Antonio doesn’t have a dedicated space yet, but the people behind its creation want it to be a connector for the gay community.

CPS Energy Sends Crews to Help Restore Power in Virginia

Millions of people on the East Coast remain without power today as Superstorm Sandy barrels into the United States. To help restore electricity, CPS Energy is sending some of its own emergency response crews.

For the next three days, 6 of CPS Energy’s utility trucks will be traveling to help Dominion Virginia Power, who sent CPS a request for assistance on Sunday Morning.

Opponents of Pre-K 4 SA Hitting Message Hard During Early Voting

Groups on both sides of the Pre-K 4 SA measure are engaging in competing messages as early voting continues, and from the steps of City Hall on Monday, the San Antonio Family Association, along with members of the Tea Party and South Texas Alliance for Progress, shouted that Mayor Julián Castro's measure just won't work.

One member likened the program to a car buyer not being able to test drive the vehicle or look under the hood before purchasing.

Truant SAISD/Judson Students Have Two Weeks Before Warrants are Issued

Students in the San Antonio and Judson Independent School Districts are on notice that warrants could be issued if they have been skipping school. Parents and kids have just two weeks to clear up any truancy issues before pick-up orders are activated.

Judge Rogelio Lopez of the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace court said he sees hundreds of students from Judson and SAISD each year, and students missing school has a dramatic effect on the drop-out rate.

UTSA and City Host Community Workshops for Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness month, and to reach out to the community, UTSA’s Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security offered a month-long program to educate people who use computers at home, businesses and organizations.

The community seminars are in plain, non-technical language, stressing current issues and solutions.
