Overcoming Homelessness In 2012: The San Antonio Homeless Population

Numbers released this week show that the average income for a homeless family is $500 with affordable housing being the most requested service for the homeless (nearly 74 percent of those surveyed).

The 2012 Facts on San Antonio Homelessness were released by SAMMinistries and are based on statistics gathered and compiled by the Trinity University class on Applied Social Studies.

In a classroom inside the new Workforce Center of Excellence on the city's Southwest Side the students are using virtual techniques to learn more efficiently.

Lincoln Electric’s Steve Hoenes guides the students through prompts on the screen and makes sure the helmet is fitted correctly. Before long, they are welding virtually and a score is produced seconds after a student finishes.

Fishman Steps Down: San Antonio Symphony Changes Leadership

The San Antonio Symphony rehearses for the opening of the 2012 season.

San Antonio Symphony President and CEO Jack Fishman has resigned from his leadership post at the orchestra. Fishman took the reins of the symphony in 2008.

However, after four years of guiding the organization, his resignation was offered Tuesday and was effective immediately.

Fishman told the San Antonio Express-News the resignation was a personal decision and “It's time to move on to another direction.”

The symphony board has appointed David Filner as interim president and CEO, and the board is starting a national search to find a permanent replacement.

Another Instructor Faces Article 32 Hearing At Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland

Staff Sgt. Christopher Jackson faces four allegations of developing unprofessional relationships and having sexual relations with two trainees.

One of the two women testified in the Article 32 hearing at Lackland that she viewed Jackson as a good leader and friend, and that he helped her decide to remain in the military at a time when she wanted to quit. She said it was later that she pursued a relationship with him.

At one time Franz Josef Haydn had the best and worst job in the world. From his earliest youth he had found his way into the employ of the Eszterhazy family. Once he settled in, and with the exception of the rare argument, this arrangement (1761-1802) continued into his final retirement from ill health. He started with Prince Paul Anton (Pal Antal 1711-1762) first as assistant Kapellemeister and then the top post. But after that patron’s death his real compositional life began.

For World AIDS Day, San Antonio Organizations Testing And Educating Community

The San Antonio AIDS Foundation's mobile testing unit outside of Monterrey Park on the city's West Side.

At Monterrey Park on the city’s West Side, Metro Health, the San Antonio AIDS Foundation, and Centro de Vida are set up to test residents with mobile trucks, tents, and information tables. In Bexar County there are 4,312 people living with HIV as of the end of 2011 according to Metro Health.

This Saturday is World AIDS Day.

In the next congress, Republican Lamar Smith will be giving up his powerful chairmanship on the House Judicial Committee to become chair of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.
