Texas Matters: The Story Of Education Funding Turns Another Page

Texas education funding is ruled unconstitutional, and Attorney General Greg Abbott is expected to appeal the case to the Texas Supreme Court. There are opposing views in the legislature on whether to immediately act to address the issue, or wait until the court forces it. Gov. Perry is causing a stir with his radio ads in California that try to lure companies to the Lone Star State, and one columnist from San Francisco says this is generating some interesting conversation.

Luminaria Returns To Light Up Downtown Streets

In one month, San Antonio will once again be illuminated for the city’s annual multi-media art show known as Luminaria.

The annual arts and culture show fills downtown with music, lights, and unique art displays from over 600 artists and 80 musicians. HemisFair Park is practically turned into a living lit-up painting.  Mayor Julián Castro said Luminaria is the largest single-night arts event in Texas.

YOSA and CCSA collaborate for BrahmsFest

Monday night, February 11, two outstanding youth groups combine on the stage of Trinity University's Laurie Auditorium to celebrate the music of Johannes Brahms. The official Brahms Festival event will feature new orchestrations and old favorites.

Marguerite McCormick and Troy Peters will conduct the Children's Chorus of San Antonio and the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio Philharmonic in "Brahms ReImagined."

Woodlawn Theater Raising Money For Victims Of Domestic Violence

"Chapter 2" stars Philip Kazen, Catherine Babbitt, Greg Hinojosa and Catherine Hayes

As part of the Bexar County Family Justice Center's annual fundraiser, the Woodlawn Theater is donating all proceeds from it's latest show, Neil Simon's "Chapter 2," to help victims of domestic violence.

The Woodlawn presents top shows for a variety of audiences, but the owners also have a vision of being a community resource for non-profit  organizations.

Student Housing Included In West Side Downtown Loft Development

The old Birdsong Peanut Factory will feature 98 loft spaces, 30-50 percent of which will be for students.

San Antonio is adding yet another urban living project in the downtown area, but this time a significant number of units will be designated for students.

The project, located at the old Birdsong Peanut Factory site on S. Frio on the near West Side, will have 98 lofts., with 30-50 percent of them for student housing.

The official groundbreaking on Wednesday marked the beginning of a 19,000 square foot facility. Mayor Julián Castro, who has pushed for urban living and has said this is the "decade of downtown," said he was surprised by a peanut factory in San Antonio.

Pentagon To Offer Some Benefits To Same-Sex Couples

Original Post (2/7/2013): The Pentagon is expected as early as today to announce certain military benefits for same-sex couples, but a source in the defense department said not all benefits will be offered.

Five Tutoring Companies Being Investigated For Fraud, Possibly More

San Antonio Independent School District is investigating at least five tutoring services that may have committed fraud. The companies are accused of requesting money for providing services to SAISD students that may not have been tutored.

The five companies have received about $240,000 from SAISD, some of which may have been requested fraudulently.

Staffing Issues At CPS Energy Partly To Blame For High January Bills

Although it may be a mild winter -- even by San Antonio standards -- customers of CPS Energy, the city’s electric company, are experiencing huge spikes in their bills, specifically January.

CPS Energy confirmed staffing of meter readers has dropped, which contributed to increased estimated meter reads. The utility's Christine Patmon said staff members who are retiring are not being replaced, and the it recently finished negotiating contracts for meter readers.
