Same-Sex Couples Want Inclusion In Immigration Reform

William Wood and Jesus Rodriguez married recently with the hope that a change in federal law will allow Wood, a U.S. citizen, to petition for legal residency for Rodriguez, who is undocumented.

Freedom-Loving Women And Madmen In Bizet’s 'Carmen'

I couldn’t have timed better the decision to replay my all time favorite Masterpiece Theatre Classic, "The Forsyte Saga," than the week the Metropolitan would broadcast its "Carmen." I had never really considered the fact that the two works and their heroine’s were so close; more sisters than cousins.

Copperleaf Quintet Reflects With Lenten Music

San Antonio's vocal chamber group the Copperleaf Quintet, has an afternoon of music for Lent planned this weekend. On the program are works by Francisco Guerrero and Tomas Luis de Victoria.

"His [de Victoria's] lines are just so exquisite, and when they are so exposed by just having one person on a part singing them, it's just a wonderful thing to hear!" said Ruth Moreland, the director and soprano for the group.

Korean Energy Company To Bring 400 Jobs To Brooks City-Base

The Korean energy company Nexolon has chosen San Antonio as its headquarters in the U.S., and promised Wednesday to bring 400 high-paying jobs to the area.

Nexolon America broke ground on a new 240,000 square foot facility at Brooks City-Base to manufacture solar panels for sale in North and South America.

Ground-breaking avant-garde composer and musician Morton Subotnick has been called the father of electronic music and is a visionary who predicted the age of non-linear interactive media.

Subotnick is in San Antonio for a series of concerts and workshops and he continues to educate and enlighten audiences around the world with non-traditional structures of music.

Next Step In Pre-K 4 SA, SAISD Approves Partnership

Now that the program has passed, city council and the mayor are working to have it ready for Fall enrollment.

One of San Antonio’s largest school districts has signed a memorandum of understanding with the city on the Pre-K 4 SA program.  

The San Antonio Independent School district’s board of trustees unanimously approved the partnership with the city last night. SAISD Spokeswoman Leslie Price said the agreement will be the framework between the district, city, and Texas Education Agency:

Rep. Lamar Smith Says Agencies Should Decide On Sequestration Cuts

Congressman Lamar Smith speaks on the mandatory cuts to the federal government if congress does not come up with a budget by March 1.

With ten days until the sequestration that prompts severe cuts to the nation’s defense budget, some lawmakers in congress are speaking against the cuts that no side wants but no one can agree on how to fix. 

Congressman Lamar Smith of San Antonio wants individual agencies to decide on what is necessary and was also critical of the recently leaked White House plan on immigration.

Update: Judge Grants Defense Motion To Supress Cell Phone Evidence

Lackland, the 'gateway' to the airforce, has been the gateway to court-martial for instructors engaging in activities against Air Force regulations.

(Update: 2/22/2013) Military Judge Don Eller ruled the government’s 77-page list of cell phone data violates the instructor’s Constitutional rights, saying investigators extracted the information without a search warrant.

He added that at some point during the investigation, somebody at Joint Base San Antonio should have had a light bulb go on that told them to find a magistrate and file affidavits to get a search warrant.

Leonard Bernstein's Lone Film Score, "On the Waterfront"

Leonard Bernstein wrote only one original film score in his career, for Elia Kazan’s classic film, “On the Waterfront,” starring Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a troubled longshoreman and one-time contender who’s gotten mixed up with the wrong crowd. Like Brando’s character, Bernstein’s score is a mixture of tenderness, violence, and nobility.
