UTSA's Great Conversations is a chance for people to learn about a variety of topics. Texas Public Radio's Ryan Loyd explains how it works.

February 20, 2012 · UTSA’s Great Conversation is in its 12th year of raising scholarship money for student scholarships in the Honors College.

Dr. Harriett Romo with the Department of Sociology says people used to have discussions around the dinner table all the time, but with today’s fast-paced society, people have gotten away from that.

“I think with all the technology, we’re getting away from really face-to-face discussions, and I think this is a good opportunity to go  back to some of that where we learn from each other and interact with each other.”

Romo says leaders from the university brainstormed ideas for topics and then sought out people to lead discussions about them.

Romo will lead a table talk on the need for public schools. She says people always talk about the negative aspects of public education.

“Yet there are many, many positive things going on and many reasons to have a public school system.”

Another topic is making Texas wines and running a winery.

“I got to visit that winery, and it was so interesting to see all the science that goes into testing the wines as they ferment. It’s really very fascinating, and I thought that would be a chance for other people to find out more about the process behind the wines they drink.”

The "Great Conversation" will be held February 29 at the Institute of Texan Cultures from 6 to 8:30 in the evening.
