I remember as yesterday my first substantial introduction to the art of Colin Davis. The cycle of Sibelius Symphonies he recorded with the Boston Symphony Orchestra was outstanding, enhanced further by the art work, drawn from the paintings of Edvard Munch. The music world reacted much as I had, declaring Sir Colin an authoritative interpreter of Sibelius. He came back to the cycle at least twice afterwards, making studio recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra and then a cycle of concert recordings with the LSO.

Days after the San Antonio Independent School District named a candidate for the district's top job, Dr. Manuel Isquierdo withdrew his name from consideration.

Monday, the SAISD School Board voted to name Isquierdo the "lone finalist" for the position.

SAISD School Board President Ed Garza announced the move Friday afternoon, saying Isquierdo felt the decision was in the best interest of all parties involved.

The lone finalist for the superintendent position at San Antonio Independent School District is under fire for his previous record, which includes a tax lien, a suspended license and charging money to a district credit card.

Manuel Isquierdo does not come to SAISD with a clean financial record, but he did have explanations for each of his accusations.

City council has approved a contract for WiFi to be installed at the Alamodome. Initially the city will spend $1.4 million from the Hotel Occupancy Tax to fund the project, but then the city says it will actually get money back from the events it attracts from out of state.

According to the city’s supporting documents from the April 11 City Council A session, the Texas Events Trust Fund legislation allows cities and counties to be reimbursed for expenses that attract high-tax impact events to Texas.

Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, got another win for open-enrollment charters schools and vouchers on Thursday as the bill, which would raise the number of charter schools to 215 by 2014, got little to no opposition, and even got some help from across the aisle.

The bill also calls for that number to be raised to 331 by 2019.
