The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has been in troubled water over grant funding issues and a lack of transparency. In the wake of the group publicly announcing that it was shutting down its foundation, Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, laid out her bill to the Senate.

"The executive director of that foundation indicated on the record that they had given my office every piece of information that we had requested and she absolutely knows that not to be true," Davis said.

In 2006 San Antonio had the highest pet-euthanasia rate in the country, killing 13,560 animals.  Last year it was 383.  While we aren't yet considered a no-kill city, we have made a lot of progress.  

The application period is open for Bexar County's inaugural arts internship program this summer. The program is funding nine summer internships with local nonprofit arts organizations and will allow the nonprofits an opportunity to offer a paid 10-week summer internship to attract motivated college students to work on seasonal or special projects. 

Students selected to participate will develop a closer understanding of how the arts benefit their community, along with the real world application of business skills that can be applied to their individual careers.

A bill in the Texas Senate authored by Sen. Leticia Van DePutte would make it illegal for any employer to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation.

A Pre-K 4 SA committee has voted to begin looking for vendors that will provide food services to the two model education centers, and city staffers want to erase the stereotype of traditional school lunches.

Deputy City Manager Peter Zanoni said there will be four food opportunities a day: breakfast, lunch, a snack, and a late snack for extended day students.

"We're going to step away from that because we're not happy with the food from school districts at this point," Zanoni said.

San Antonio nonprofit Merced Housing Texas has received a $200,000 grant to help low-income families in its housing developments and throughout the city.

For the next two years the group will receive $25,000 every quarter to help facilitate its programs. Merced operates nearly 1,700 units for low income people across the state in Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, San Antonio and other cities but are based here.

Monday, April 8th and Tuesday, April 9th mark the twenty-first annual Jazz Meets Classical concerts of Musical Offerings.   The performances include traditional classical composers and jazz, and often mix the two genres! This year the theme includes tributes to the great composer and performer Dave Brubeck, who passed last December.

The Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance has released its legislative agenda for the 83rd session of the Texas Legislature, throwing its support behind 38 bills that promote water conservation and water quality, call for better funding of state parks, and improve coordination between various agencies dealing with water.

GEAA Executive Director Annalisa Peace said the broad support from the alliance indicates that legislators are thinking creatively and responsibly about Texas’ water problems.

Trafficking is a multi-billion dollar enterprise in the United states, and Texas is a main transportation area. A 2007 study showed that one in five trafficked persons came through Texas.

Awareness is key to action, and despite new awareness efforts, many still don't know what trafficking looks like, what the indicators are, and how women find themselves in these situations.
