As combat operations end in Iraq, service members are returning home to their families and loved ones. More than seventy men and women from a Texas Army National Guard unit arrived home in San Antonio on Thursday. Texas Public Radio’s Terry Gildea reports.
August 19, 2010 · The 1st company, 141st infantry with the Texas Army National Guard wrapped up a deployment in Iraq and returned home to its headquarters at Camp Bullis north of San Antonio. Many of the seventy men and women from all over Central Texas had been away from their families for more than a year. Lt. Col. Scott Macleod, one of battalion commanders, led a welcome home ceremony.
“I am glad to say that now your soldiers are home. HHC, First to the one–four–one is back – so let’s give these wonderful soldiers a round of applause please,” said Lt. Col. Macleod.
First Sergeant Todd McClain from Dallas couldn’t believe this day had finally come.
“The deployment went good, both for us over there as well as — at least for my family back here it went well — but now it’s like I can download everything, and try to re-cooperate and get back to normal life,” said Sergeant McClain.
McClain’s three sons stood by him grinning and his wife Shelley was thankful her husband made it home safe from Iraq.
“Actually it’s been a good year with a good support system back home, but nothing like having your husband home and we’re extremely proud of him and his service and we’re admiring him very much for all of his hard work and dedication,” said Shelley McClain.
This is the seventh of eight Texas Army National Guard units scheduled to return home month.
