NPR’s StoryCorps is in town to record stories of life in San Antonio. Texas Public Radio’s Eileen Pace says one of our U.S. Congressional representatives signed up to share his story.

August 16, 2010 · StoryCorps is a project to record stories of diversity and life experiences of a cross-section of people in the United States. Congressman Charlie Gonzales, who grew up very near downtown San Antonio, said, although the city has grown and changed in many ways since he was a boy, the city remains a unique and flavorful experience.

“The biggest thing for San Antonio — and I’m not real sure why — is the openness of its population, its people, to one another, the fact that we are more tolerant and inclusive,” Gonzales said. “And the pace of San Antonio — as big as it is and as busy as we are — it’s not Houston; it’s not Dallas. It just has its own character. We’ve decided along the way that we would preserve maybe a pace that’s just a couple of steps, a little slower.”

StoryCorps can be heard during Morning Edition on KSTX 89.1 during the 5:00 and 7:00 hours. The collection of interviews is housed at the Library of Congress.
