The Department of Energy announced today that Texas will receive money to research ways to capture and store carbon dioxide. More from TPR’s Terry Gildea.
August 11, 2010 · Three Texas based projects will receive $2.2 million from the DOE to develop techniques to store carbon dioxide in geological formations. The goal of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while harvesting coal. James Markowsky is the Departments Assistant Secretary for fossil energy.
“There are a number of challenges here. We’re focusing our research on capture technology, transporting it and also the geological storage to ensure that we can store it safely, economically and ensure residents that this is a very safe way to store CO2,” said Markowsky.
One project at Fusion Technologies in The Woodlands and two more at the University of Texas at Austin will split the $2.2 million for experiments lasting up to three years. These are part of 15 projects nationwide that the DOE is financing with more than $21 million.
