As a federal judge issued her ruling, blocking provisions of Arizona’s new immigration law, republican Texas Senator John Cornyn weighed in on the issue. TPR’s Terry Gildea has the story.
July 28, 2010 · Senator Cornyn was critical of the law when it was first passed by the Arizona State Legislature. But speaking from his Washington office by phone, Cornyn used the ruling as an opportunity to criticize the Obama Administration and majority Democrats for not passing federal immigration reform.
“The irony here is that the state law is struck down, at least in part, and it leaves a void that can only be filled by the federal government. And I don’t see much interest or appetite on the part of the majority party or the administration to step up and do its job,” said Cornyn.
On Wednesday Federal Judge Susan Bolton blocked several provisions of the Arizona law from taking effect, including sections that require police to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws. Cornyn believes border security should be the first priority of any immigration bill.
