The Bexar County Performing Arts Center is moving closer towards opening day. Texas Public Radio’s David Martin Davies reports.

July 6, 2010 · County Judge Nelson Wolff tells Texas Public Radio that the recent $15 million gift from the Tobin Foundation for the Performing Arts Center was significant boost to the project.

Wolff said the goal is to build the community a world-class quality facility.

"It has to be acoustically the best around, and the customer that’s coming to the events has to feel very comfortable. The seating, the air conditioning, the spacing needs to be very comfortable. So if we can meet those two objectives, then we don’t have to have the fanciest marble around or millions of dollars of art that we might not be able to afford,” said Wolff.

It was a little more than two years ago that Bexar County voters approved the extension of the Venue Tax that will provide $100 million in funding for the Performing Arts Center.

The new performing arts center will provide one large theater, one smaller venue, rehearsal facilities, educational spaces, and administrative offices. The center will be a permanent home for the San Antonio Symphony, Ballet, and Opera. Wolff said the timetable for the Tobin Performing Arts Center remains on target.

"By June of next year, actually break ground and start work on it. They have to gut the inside and take the roof up. They figure it will take about two years to do the construction. So if everything goes right, three years from where we are right now, hopefully, we’ll be having a grand opening of the performing arts center,” said Wolff.
