As the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan wrapped up in Washington, Senator John Cornyn (R-Tex.) expressed some final thoughts on the person who could become the high court’s next justice. More from TPR’s Terry Gildea.
June 30, 2010 · Cornyn spent the week with his fellow members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, grilling Kagan on judicial policy and her personal views. While he acknowledged the nominee’s intelligence, he says he’s still uncertain if Kagan believes the court should be a check for the other branches of the federal government.
“Frankly I’m not sure how much more we know now than we knew going in, other than the fact that a number of the things that Ms. Kagan said were somewhat reassuring, others were not. In the latter category I would say she… I don’t think she is going to be one who will attempt to try and reign in a runaway Congress when it comes to vast expansions of federal government power,” said Cornyn.
Cornyn failed to say whether he will vote for or against Kagan when the Judiciary Committee votes on her nomination in a couple of weeks. If approved her nomination would then move to the Senate floor, where analysts expect she will be confirmed, but say many Republicans will vote against her.
