Residents in the Lower Rio Grande Valley are preparing for Alex. Texas Public Radio’s David Martin Davies has the story.
June 29, 2010 · Alex is still churning in the Gulf of Mexico but already the outer bands of the storm are bringing heavy rains to the South Texas coastline.
Brownsville native Manny Gauno says folks are spending the day before expected landfall getting supplies, filling sandbags and boarding up their homes.
The last Hurricane to hit Brownsville was Dolly two years ago. It was a weak category one storm, but still it caused significant damage and flooded parts of the Valley.
The forecast says Alex will be worse – possibly a category 2 story at landfall.
Evacuations have been ordered for Port Isabel on South Padre Island.

Those wanting to evacuate away from the border still will need the cross the Border Patrol checkpoint. That’s a concern for those with problems with their U.S. residency status. |
