December 14, 2009 · The state of Texas will use $23 million in federal stimulus money to give consumers rebates when they replace their old, working appliances with new, energy efficient models.
It’s like the cash for clunkers program that gave the auto industry a jump, but the Texas cash for energy star program is easier to manage.
The shopper will buy the appliance at full price at the store and then mail-in a rebate card.
The biggest rebate is up to $1,600 for a heat pump.
The state is also throwing in an extra $75 for those who recycle their old appliances.
To be eligible, the appliances must be bought between April 16 and April 25, 2010. Consumers will be able to reserve an appliance rebate two weeks beforehand. After the reserved rebates are awarded, the rest will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Shoppers will be limited to two appliance rebates and two recycling rebates per household.
Program Details:
Texas will use approximately $23 million in federal stimulus funds for a mail-in rebate program for consumers who purchase certain energy efficient household appliances.
The U.S. Department of Energy approved the rebates for consumers who buy eligible Energy Star appliances and replace the same type of old appliance that's functional. The Texas program will also offer an incentive to recycle old appliances.
The mail-in rebates will apply to eligible appliances purchased between April 16 and April 25, 2010. The 10-day period will coincide with Earth Day. Offering the program next spring will give retailers time to stock up on appliances, give the state time to select a vendor to administer the rebates, and allow ample time to inform consumers about details of the rebate program.
