A San Antonio military installation is playing a key role in controlling the spread of the H1N1 flu virus, and educating students about infectious diseases. More from Texas Public Radio’s Terry Gildea.

October 15, 2009 · Scientists at Brooks City Base are in charge of testing flu samples collected from Air Force bases all over the world.  Jim Wiggins is head of public affairs for Brooks City Base.

“When we test a sample that turns out to be positive for H1N1, we let the applicable officials know in that community that we have a positive sample so they can start taking the proactive steps to protect their population,” said Wiggins.

The base is also using its operation as an example to help educate middle school and high school students. A video produced for the LabTV Website gives students a complete explanation of how Brooks and other operations are fighting to control the spread of H1N1.

“With the LabTV project we are involved in teaching and informing. For example, when you watch the video you actually learn what the H stands for and what the N stands for in the H1N1 flu virus,” Wiggans said.

Wiggins hopes the video and others like it will spark a greater interest in science and infectious diseases, and maybe motivate some young people to look into a career in the Air Force.  The video is available on the Web at www.labtvonline.org.
