Anti-Nuclear Protestors Prep for Public Referendum

Activists gathered Wednesday to voice their opposition to CPS Energy’s plan to expand nuclear energy. And they say they are ready to take their fight to the next level. Texas Public Radio’s David Martin Davies has the story.

October 14, 2009 · Chanting, wearing costumes and banging pots, the anti-nuclear demonstrators protested in front of city hall.

Adriana Chavez is the spokesperson for Energia Mia.

Chavez and others want CPS Energy to embrace solar and wind power and not invest in the expansion of the South Texas Nuclear Project.

Since CPS energy is a municipally-owned utility, the final decision on making the mega investment falls to city council.

Chavez said Energia Mia is already preparing in case city council approves the nuclear expansion. They’ll then begin a petition campaign to get a referendum before San Antonio voters.
