October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and the Bexar County Family Justice Center is looking to highlight a disturbing trend and offer a lifeline to families in distress. Texas Public Radio’s David Martin Davies has the story.
October 9, 2009 ·San Antonio Police Department statistics so far for the year show a spike in domestic violence offenses. They have climbed thirty-three percent.
“We’ve had an economic crisis, and that crisis is simply spilling over into the homes,” said Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed.
She says there’s a direct cause and effect relationship between people losing their jobs and an increase in family violence.
“Financial issues, credit issues; those stressors are being faced by victims of domestic violence,” Reed said.
To help provide a solution the Bexar County Family Justice Center is teaming up with Capital One Bank to provide financial literacy training.
“Financial literacy is so important for taking a person who is a victim and turn them from a survivor into a thriver,” said Mark Koshnick is the San Antonio market president for Capital One.
The training includes learning how to form a household budget, how to find a job, and credit repair. For more information about attending a financial literacy course visit the Bexar County Family Justice Center website.
