Soldiers at Fort Sam Remember 9/11 Victim

Lt. Col. Karen Wagner

September 11, 2009 · As the nation reflects on the eighth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, some soldiers gathered at Fort Sam Houston this morning to honor one of their own that perished on that day.

Several dozen service members gathered inside Fort Sam Houston’s National Cemetery at dawn to remember the life of Lt. Col. Karen Wagner. Wagner was killed in the attack of the Pentagon on September 11th. Colonel Dawn Smith led the service.

“And although Karen lies in a place of honor not left fallen at the Pentagon, we come here because to remember is to make sure that she’s not left behind. To forget a fallen soldier is to leave them behind and we will never forget,” said Smith.

Wagner graduated from Judson High School and the University of Nevada’s ROTC program. She had a successful career in the Army, specifically supporting the Army Medical Command. Col. Linda Carmen was a close friend of Wagner’s and spent time with her just before the attack.

“But little did I know that a couple months from then that 9-11 would take place. And so as I was sitting there at Walter Reed hearing and watching on TV what was going on, I remembered my friend… She was a great friend,” said Carmen.

Those in attendance lit candles and laid a bouquet of flowers on Wagner’s grave. The Lt. Colonel who grew up in the San Antonio area continues to be remembered. A high school in the Judson Independent School District now bears her name.
