A San Antonio school district has announced it will not broadcast President Obama’s speech on education next week. More from Texas Public Radio’s Terry Gildea.
September 3, 2009 ·President Obama is set to deliver a speech next Tuesday to the nation’s students in a live Webcast from the White House. The President says he plans to encourage students to set educational goals and take responsibility for learning.
But students in the Northeast School District will not have an opportunity to see the speech live. Officials have announced they will tape the speech and post it on the district’s Web site – under the parent portal link. Lara Calderon is a spokeswoman for Northeast ISD.
“The decision really was about logistics and convenience. For us to air it during that time frame was just really unwieldy because of all the different activities happening during that time frame,” said Calderon.
Calderon says too many students will be eating lunch, in testing sessions or involved in off-campus activities at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, when the speech is set to begin.
District officials say they do not want to disrupt the school day. While some groups of parents have said they don’t want their children to hear the speech, Calderon says Northeast ISD’s decision is not based on pressure from parents.
“We have heard from as many parents who did not want it aired as we have parents who have wanted it aired. At this point we’ve not heard from any students,” Calderon.
Officials from the San Antonio Independent School District will allow their teachers to broadcast the speech in their classrooms, but students must have parent permission to participate.
