March 5, 2009 · Time is running out for Sheila McNeil to enter the city’s mayoral race. Monday is the filing deadline for those seeking San Antonio’s highest office. The three most visible candidates, former city councilman Julian Castro, current councilwoman Diane Cibrian and public relations consultant Trish DeBerry Mejia have all handed in their paperwork. With only a few days left to decide, McNeil won’t verbally commit but the race is on her mind.

"I am serious about it – it is important to me – I’m not doing this haphazardly. My goal is to make the right decision – and I need to take the time that I need to do that and that’s what’ I’m doing," said McNeil.

McNeil’s term representing council district 2 ends in June. She feels the three top candidates aren’t putting enough focus on the long-term economic health of San Antonio.

"So it’s a serious decision I’m making – it’s a big decision. I feel I have a responsibility to offer my experience and my tenure as a council member – actively involved over last four years in all of the major issues that face San Antonio. And as I look forward – based on what I’ve been through I see the economic storms that are approaching this city and we’ve got to prepare for them – and that would be my goal," said McNeil

McNeil’s critics say she would be entering the race too late without the financial support she needs to win. But the councilwoman says she can raise the necessary capital

"Raising money – while it’s very important and I anticipate doing that – money doesn’t win elections – it’s the vote of the people," said McNeil

McNeil says she will consult those closest to her over the weekend and announce her decision on Monday.
