The African Presence in Mexico - Museo Alameda

November 12, 2008 · The African presence in Mexico is the largest exhibit of its kind to ever highlight the contributions of blacks to the Mexican culture spanning 500 years.

The fact that the first freetown for the formerly enslaved is in Veracruz, Mexico, is a testament to the unique bond that formed between the descendants of Africa and the indigenous people of Mexico, as well as those with Spanish conquistador heritage.

It wasn't until recently that the concept of the African contribution was separated from traditional mestizo culture and the museo presents this new persepective in an in-depth fashion.  The exhibit explores the social, cultural and legal status of Afro-Mexicans.
