Chalk It Up!

October 9, 2008 ·It's the 5th annual Chalk It Up event by Artpace on Saturday.  All along Houston Street between Soledad and South Presa, pedestrians can enjoy art as it's being made.

"People get to see the work as it's being made over time and Chalk it Up sort of takes it to the streets and people not only get to see work being mae they get to take pasrt in the creative process."

ArtPace Executive Director Matthew Drutt, says he expects nearly 18-thousand people at this year's event.

"It's about demystifying the experience of contemporary art.  That's one of the things ArtPace has been doing since it opened its doors in 1994."

They've also been hosting international and local artists in their programs.  And this year almost 40 featured artists will be on hand to create 15 by 20 foot murals, while young artists from forty schools and community groups will develop their own creations.  At the end of the day the streets will be washed clean, teaching people another thing about art.

"The idea that artwork is ephemeral is built into this project.  That contemporary art is both something that has long life but can also be something that has a very temporary life."
