Literacy San Antonio Named Top Literacy Organization of the Year

September 30, 2008 ·On the last day of National Literacy Month, the Junior League's Signature Project, Literacy San Antonio, was recognized for its work to improve literacy in the Alamo City.  The project has yet to go public but the buzz it's creating among city leaders is growing.

"We are organizing the leaders in the community and engaging in regional planning, which is common to other community groups, but our emphasis on marketing and infrastructure is unique,” says Pamela Toman, Chair of Literacy San Antonio.  

Toman is also former Director of Marketing for multi-billion dollar corporation, Sun Microsystems.

 "I know that many large corporations have to think about how to change attitudes with marketing and how to organize information through technology, and that's basically what we're looking to do around the issue of literacy for the community," Toman continues

Literacy San Antonio is the fourth group to be recognized by the Commission on Literacy.

 "We realize we have a long way to go but it feels great to take this step and be recognized."
