September 29, 2008 · Officials at Randolph opened the new personnel center with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The facility brings together missions from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia – and those already based at Randolph to one central location – creating a logistical headquarters where the deployments of all air force personnel will be managed. Colonel Paul Ackerly is in charge of the operation.
"By merging the personnel services – we’re going to be able to do a better job taking care of the airmen – and by airmen I mean both officers, enlisted and civilians – so now whether the airmen is being deployed or they’re being put on a normal rotational assignment as part of their career – or there’s some career development to help them be better prepared for the future - it will happen here at the personnel center," said Ackerly.
In addition to managing the movements of airmen, the state of the art facility has an emergency operations center ready to go online during a man-made or natural disaster.
“And we have the capability in here as you can see from some of the TV screens to monitor what’s going on in the world – and we recently used this for both the hurricanes – Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike – where we stood a 24-7 operation in here and maintained it for two weeks,” said Ackerly.
Nearly 22-hundred airmen work at the center. Ackerly says having all of the operations in one place will make it easier to manage deployments more efficiently. |
