September 25, 2008 ·The opera about the fiery spanish dancer is a favorite among performers and audiences alike. Carmen, is after all what Stage Director, Michael Scarola calls, the "C" in the ABC's of Opera.
"No matter where you sit in the house you will see something very special going on at all times."
Much of the excitement comes from the scenery and the cast. The large stage of the Lila Cockrell Theatre serves as a perfect place for all the action, including the sizable cast.
"Between the adult chorus, the kids chorus, the dancers, the supers and of course the soloists, it is huge."
It's also a huge performance for San Antonio Native, Michael Wade Lee. He makes his debut with the San Antonio Opera playing the tragic hero of the tale, Don Jose. And if the hometown hero or the familiar music doesn't bring you in, Scarola says there's more.
"Knives, guns, dancing, singing, castanets...it's a really very exciting show."
Carmen runs Friday night through Sunday afternoon. |
