September 19, 2008 ·The Bijou at Crossroads Theater isn't generally known for screening blockbuster hits. The venue is known for playing non-traditional, foreign and even artsy films that don't generally receive wide distribution. This is just the place for Chris Eska to screen his film, August Evening, a film about family and letting go set against the backdrop of South Texas. While the local media is raving about the freshman effort of the non-actor cast and largely volunteer crew, the real success lies in how many people actually buy a ticket to the show says Eska.
"There are tons of films that win all the awards and get the best reviews and they don't make anything at the box office on the first weekend and they get kicked out of the theatre right away."
So starts Eska's grassroots effort . He shot locally, scouted local talent and is now relying on local support for his film's success.
"How well this film does this weekend at the Bijou in San Antonio — it's not just bout August Evening; it's about local filmmaking, about San Antonio, about making it easier for future filmmakers to get their work seen."
So far the film is doing well. The Friday noon showing was packed and movie-watchers, like Venus Prado came away impressed.
"I thought it was a fantastic, beautiful movie. I cried several times."
