June 2, 2008 · Less than a month after Bexar County voters approved using the visitors tax to build a San Antonio performing arts center, conceptual sketches of the center are unveiled to the public.
San Antonio architect Ted Flato made the drawings which re-orient the Municipal Auditorium to take better advantage of its position on the San Antonio Riverwalk. In the drawings there is an outdoor theater and plenty of green space. Also the iconic façade of the Municipal Auditorium isn’t changed even though the plans call for raising the roof of the auditorium to improve the acoustics.
Flato said the drawings are a starting point for the project and the future architect could pursue a different vision. The Bexar County Performing Acts Center Foundation which is overseeing the development and management of the center will have a global competition to find an architect.
Mayor Phil Hardberger and County Judge Nelson Wolff said this project is moving quickly due to the spirit of cooperation that exists between the city and the county.
“This is an example of what happens when we work together,” said Wolff. The city donated the land and buildings for the performing arts center while the county used its venue taxing authority to raise the $100 million for the project.
Wolff and Hardberger said they were also working on a master plan for parking for the facility. “We know there has to be good close parking for this to work,” said Hardberger.
It’s estimated that the Bexar County Performing Arts Center will have its opening night in about five years. |
