December 26, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with David Rockefeller, Jr. about “One Island, One Ocean: Around the Americas Aboard Ocean Watch” by Herb McCormick.
Rockefeller wrote the forward for the book, sponsored the expedition and also participated in the historic journey. In May of 2009, the crew of the 64-foot sailboat “Ocean Watch” left Seattle to embark on a 28,000 mile journey to circumnavigate the Americas. This never before accomplished feat was made possible by the melting of the ice cap in the Northwest Passage.
The good news was that the sailing ship and crew were able to safely make it through the passage. The bad news is that the melting is a sign of global warming that is changing our world forever. Rockefeller talks about the genesis of the adventure, what the crew observed and the educational mission of the journey. The book coffee-table-book contains many photographs and a compelling story of adventure along with delivering a strong environmental message.
David Rockefeller, Jr. is the great-grandson of the founder of Standard Oil. In addition to being a wealthy businessman, he is an avid sailor and philanthropist with an active interest in the environment. Because of his special interest in conserving the ocean, he founded Sailors for the Sea, which helped fund the voyage of “Ocean Watch.”
