Southside Street Project Boosting Growth For Area Schools, Businesses

The city has begun a major "complete streets" project on Villaret Boulevard, which spans east and west on the city's Southside.

Once completed, the $7 million project will double the width of Villaret Boulevard the length of Palo Alto College, a drainage system will be installed to prevent flooding in future storms, and there will be lighting, curbs, sidewalks, and bike lanes.

These improvements are needed to keep up with continued growth of Palo Alto, as well as housing and industry locating in that part of town.

Art Installation Connecting Southside Neighborhoods

Underneath heavily-traveled Interstate 35 at Theo and Malone, in an unexpected place for art, six spherical chandeliers bathe the ground, concrete columns and underside of the bridge with rich, vibrant color and transform an otherwise industrial thoroughfare into an enjoyable space for pedestrians and drivers.

Ballroom Luminoso is the first public art project to be completed under the new bond program approved by voters in 2012.

Brooks City Base Chooses CEO Finalist To Lead Development

The Brooks Development Authority board voted to enter into contract negotiations for its next chief executive officer, but leaders are not ready to divulge his or her identity.

Manny Pelaez, chairman of the Brooks Development Authority, said the board interviewed 402 viable candidates out of the 6,000 applicants.

Last week the field of applicants for the next CEO of Brooks was narrowed to only five, and Wednesday the board chose one to take Brooks into the future.

Thanks To Stimulus Money, SAISD Schools/Communities Get Health Renovations

Five schools in the San Antonio ISD are being outfitted with opportunities for the community to exercise and get healthy. The latest project, at Harris Middle School, has a three week deadline.

The outdoor community basketball court at Harris must be finished by March 18, which is the end date for federal stimulus money designated to promote health in neighborhoods.

The total cost of the basketball court project is just over $93,000.

Walmart Groundbreaking Signals Another Reason South Side Is Still Alive

City leaders, area chamber presidents and Walmart officials officially broke ground at the site of a new store to be built on the city’s south side. The 180,000 foot store will be located at I-35 and Palo Alto Road, where Palo Alto meets Patron Street.

Daniel Morales with Walmart said opening stores in communities often sparks economic growth.

20 Years Later, Mission Trail Project Nears Completion

The plan to connect San Antonio’s Missions from the Alamo to Mission Espada has been ongoing since the mid-1990’s. This portion of the project--called package 4 and 5--will repair streets and add pedestrian and bike routes along Mission Road to Roosevelt Avenue.

B-Cycle Continues Expansion On South Side To Missions San Jose And Concepción

San Antonio’s bike share program is expanding into the South Side with several new B-cycle kiosks around the Missions.

Cyclists rode to Mission San Jose to illustrate the new availability of B-cycle just south of downtown; six new stations have been added at some of San Antonio’s Mission’s along the Mission Reach.

First part of Sixmile Creek Drainage Improvements Nearing Completion

South Side residents got some relief from flooding and from some of the related construction as officials announced the completion of the first section of the Sixmile Creek Flood Control Project.

The project is part of Bexar County’s $500 million capital improvement campaign, and the first section to open cost $2.7 million.
