“Diary of an Eco-Outlaw: An Unreasonable Woman Breaks the Law for Mother Earth” by Diane Wilson
August 1, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Diane Wilson, from Seadrift, Texas, about how she became an accidental environmental activist, and why she sank her shrimp boat in protest over water pollution from a chemical company. Now a former shrimper, Wilson has devoted her life to fighting corporate polluters the world over and speaking out against human rights abuses. Wilson admits that some of her tactics are extreme, but she believes that in order for people to notice you have to take risks. One of her more outrageous actions was organizing a “semi-nude” protest against BP at their Houston, Texas offices in May of 2010. July 18, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Annie Leonard, an expert in international sustainability and environmental health issues. She is the creator of the internet film “The Story of Stuff” and the author of “The Story of Stuff: The Impact of Overconsumption on the Planet, Our Communities, and Our Health And How We Can Make It Better.” In this interview she explains how her “Story of Stuff” project began. She shares examples from the book including what happens to our electronics when we dispose of them and how the making of a simple item such as a t-shirt can have significant environmental impact. Leonard also cautions against our disposable approach to consumerism and advises purchasing quality items that will last for years instead of having to be replaced frequently. “Sunny Day Farms” with Director Brooke Chavez
July 4, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Brooke Chavez, Director of Sunny Day Farms Animal Sanctuary, about the animal rescue mission and their sustainable living education activities.They host field trips for area schools and provide a unique location for children to learn about animals and see on-site demonstrations of various sustainable agricultural practices. Sunny Day Farms is currently located on 15 acres, but for their mission to grow, they need more space. The farm has approximately 300 animals and is at capacity. They are looking for farmland north of San Antonio and are hoping to find a land donor to help them out. Like most non-profits they are dependent on donations to carry out their mission. June 20, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with explorer, global green leader, and eco-TV host David de Rothschild about the voyage of the Plastiki, an innovative and mostly untested 60-foot catamaran that floated on 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles as it made its way across the Pacific Ocean. June 6, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Priscilla Short about her experience living off the grid in a solar powered straw bale house outside of Taos, New Mexico. The book grew out of what she learned from the experience about conserving resources. The book is filled with ideas, some of which are easy to implement and others which require a higher level of commitment. One key to conserving resources is to change your expectations. She suggests you turn off commercial media and once you are free from the constant bombardment of advertisements, she believes you’ll discover you don’t need as many “things” as you thought. May 9, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Richard Louv, author of “The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature Deficit Disorder.” Louv is a journalist and the author of eight books about the connection between family, nature and community. His previous book is the international bestseller “Last Child in the Woods.” Louv talks about the importance of nature both to the individual and for its positive societal impact. He relates studies that show the connection between the mind, body and nature. For example, after returning from a nature hike, backpackers demonstrated improved scores on mental activity tests such as proofreading. Louv also discusses the “Transition Town Movement” which emphasizes energy conservation and increased integration of nature in the city. May 9, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Matt Delnick, CEO of Greenstar Recycling about San Antonio's recycling program and future plans to expand recycling in the city. Delnick recently delivered a speech at the United Nations about recycling and presented San Antonio's recycling efforts as model for other cities to follow. San Antonio's recycling program will serve as a case study to be developed with the United Nations and the London School of Business. April 25, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Emily Hunter about the new eco-warriors who are carrying on the work of her parent’s generation. Emily’s parents co-founded Green Peace and although she initially resisted, it’s no surprise that she ended up being an environmental journalist and activist. She says that the tools for advocacy have changed since Green Peace was created and the book features 22 people who are using their skill sets to galvanize change. Hunter describes her own activism including being taken hostage while patrolling the Galapagos Islands. She hopes that readers will find ways to become eco-warriors and create positive change. On Saturday May 7th, Solar Fest brings together solar and other vendors to share information, food, live bands on a solar powered stage and other family fun activities. The day begins with a race and continues with the Solar Fest.
On May 19th, the Solar San Antonio Annual Fundraising Luncheon will take place at the Pearl Stable. This year’s keynote speaker will be Bill Nye, “The Science Guy.” Awards will also be presented to people and organizations that are championing solar energy.

March 28, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Till Kotter, Project Coordinator for the Climate Network. The Climate Network is a two year project of the Heinrich Böll Organization, a political non-profit organization striving to promote democracy, civil society, equality and a healthy environment internationally. Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, the Heinrich Böll Organization has 28 offices worldwide and cooperates with more than 200 partners in more than 60 countries.
Kotter was in San Antonio recently to attend a meeting of the National Farmers Organization. He is working with groups in the United States to promote renewable energy projects. He sites examples of successful projects in Germany which could be replicated in the US if the proper policies are put in place. Kotter describes “clean contracts” that require power companies to buy power generated by farmers through solar and wind power, creating incentives for project development. March 14, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Daniel Tucker about Farm Together Now: A Portrait of People, Places and Ideas for a New Food Movement. Tucker describes commercial farming as a "broken system."
The book profiles individuals and organizations that are working toward sustainable alternatives to mass food production. Tucker says a reoccurring concern of the people interviewed is the distance that most food must travel between producers and consumers.
In the interview, Tucker describes some of the people featured in the book including a beekeeper who has expanded to offering bread made from locally grown wheat, a fish farm that uses food waste to fertilize plants, and an inner city group that started out as a break dancing troupe and found their way into urban farming.

February 28, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Kris Zebrowksi, the Communication and Outreach Coordinator for Build San Antonio Green. The organization administers San Antonio’s residential green building program. They work with builders and certify when homes have been built to a certain level of energy efficiency. Zebrowski says Build San Antonio Green plays an important role as a third party independent verifier so that home buyers can have a clear picture of what “green” means when it comes to home construction. The first Level 3 Solar Home certification was recently achieved by a builder in San Antonio. Zebrowski describes the energy efficiency required to be awarded the Level 3 solar home status. He says that the demand for solar energy is growing and that over time the cost of solar panels should continue to drop. More information is available at buildsagreen.org.

February 14, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with green architect Peter Pfeiffer. He is the founding principal of the Austin-based architectural firm, Barley & Pfeiffer. In 2004, Peter Pfeiffer designed the first zero energy home built in Texas. In 2006, he was recognized as one of the 10 most influential residential architects of the decade. He discusses his philosophy on green building design and describes one of his more recent projects, the “Mueller House” in Austin, which gained LEED Platinum status in 2010. Pfeiffer says that while green construction techniques are becoming more mainstream, builders need to concentrate on efficient design instead of relying on gadgets. January 17, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Eric Herm about his book, Son of a Farmer, Child of the Earth: A Path to Agriculture’s Higher Consciousness. Eric Herm is a fourth generation farmer who lives and works on a farm near Ackerly, Texas, that has been in his family for almost 100 years. Returning to the farm after 10 years, he discovered the state of agriculture had changed dramatically, and he wasn’t happy with the direction it has taken. He began to make changes on his own farm and also to research the problems he found with modern commercial farming practices. In his book, Eric shares his thoughts and research about the impact of commercial farming and his recommendations on how things can be changed for the better. November 22, 2010 · Dan Skinner talks with Bill Barker, a senior management analyst for sustainable systems in the Office of Environmental Policy for the City of San Antonio about how the Alamo City is preparing for the arrival of electric cars. Barker discusses the advantages of electric cars, an incentive program for installing home charging systems and plans for placing charging stations in public locations. April 30, 2009 · Bruce Evans, Director of Customer Solutions and Delivery at CPS joins host Dan Skinner for a discussion about the flexible solar cover installation at the Tessman Road Landfill. With the addition of the solar power to their existing methane gas-to-electricity plant, the landfill facility is operated completely on green power.
