January 9, 2012 · When Michael Crichton passed away in 2008 he left behind an unfinished novel. Richard Preston talks with host Dan Skinner about how he became involved with the project to complete the novel.
Preston said the unfinished novel reminded him of Crichton’s “Jurassic Park” and “Andromeda Strain.” The action-filled story is largely set in the “micro” world after a group of grad students is shrunk to a half inch high and are abandoned in a Hawaiian rain forest.
Readers learn fascinating facts about the insect world as the students use their knowledge to battle for survival. In addition to the insects, birds and bats, the students also have to contend with human predators.
Richard Preston, a bestselling author in his own right, describes the challenge of writing the novel in the “voice” of Michael Crichton. He immersed himself in the writing and speaking patterns of Crichton so that he could reflect his style.
Preston says that Crichton was fascinated by nature and this posthumous novel centered on the “wildlife” found in the micro world rivals anything you could observe on the plains of Africa. More information is available at michaelcrichton.net and richardpreston.net.
