Placemaking is a community-driven, collaborative process that provides a springboard to transforms parks, town squares and other public spaces into places that promote the health, happiness and well-being of a city. The process can help turn an empty parking lot into an open air market or transform a library into a vibrant cultural center by uniting citizens in the common goal of improving the community in which they live. The placemaking philosophy was adopted in the creation of Houston's first major downtown park, Discovery Green. Civic leaders, local foundations and members of the surrounding community united to revitilize downtown Houston by creating a vibrant community green space that was conceived as Houston's Backyard. The hugely successful project has reignited downtown residential and business development and has improved the quality of life of downtown Houston residents. Placemaking in San Antonio
Phil Myrick of the Project for Public Spaces will join us for Views and Brews: Placemaking to detail the community revitalization concept. Afterwards, Views and Brews attendees will work with community facilitators to help generate ideas on how we can implement placemaking downtown and throughout the Alamo City. The city of San Antonio is seeking the community's input to identify where we can adopt the placemaking philosophy to revitalize downtown. Visit the Project for Public Spaces website and use the interactive map to identify placemaking projects that can help transform our city center into a more livable and vibrant neighborhood. Share which downtown places matter most to you - the best, the worst, and the places that have the greatest opportunity. Post your ideas to improve them. Add as many places as you can. The results will add up to an agreement on the places the city should focus on. The city will use your input to identify and fund projects that can help re-Imagine the heart of San Antonio. |
